I think when they say "the south end" they mean towards Verona. People are moving out of Tupelo to Saltillo, Mooreville, Mantachie and so on to get to the better public schools. But property values are higher that way also. just my opinion as a short-timer here.

The intersection of Gloster and Main street (Hwy 6) is known as Crosstown. which essentially divides the city into the older and newer sections.

Default Central locations to live in tupelo.

I've lived in Tupelo for 26 years. There are a lot of old houses int the central area that are nice and safe. I would probably not buy for $50,000.
You would probably need to be closer to $150,00 for a nice and safe central home. When people say the south end is dying, that's the area close to verona(stay away). East tupelo is very outdated also. If you want to walk around town you want to be on the north side of mainstreet downtown. The north and west sides of town are the best though.

Love Tupelo, and I just found Building Blocks in Tupelo. It is a discount building and home supply store on Cliff Gookin. Since I love making trash to treasure furniture and home decor, this place is heavenly!!! They are just getting started, I think.

I agree the people there are super-nice as they are everywhere that is not tainted with what i think of as "modern life." I hope they don't change, but am worried they may if they get a major highway through there.

Does anyone know if Tupelo is getting an Interstate or some such?

Yes. US 78 is being transformed into I-22 from Birmingham to Memphis. I'm not sure when it's supposed to be finished (especially now with the economy, etc.) but originally it was supposed to be complete in 2010.

It was just announced this week that the Toyota factory is on hold. The building itself is 90% complete, and they will finish it, but no machinery is to be brought in for the foreseeable future. On the bright side, it was announced today that Tupelo's Cooper Tire facility, with its 1300 jobs, was not selected for closure by the company.

Darn it. I hope that's not a bad thing when it's done. I'd like for small town America to be a repository of some of our best values. Am not so sure it's that easy when places get "city-fied."

I'm glad for the sake of its employees.

I have lived here in In, for almost 10 years now. about 20 mins from chicago. I was born and raised in Ms, I really miss it alot. I lived in Mantachie and worked in Tupelo at Daybrite. I really miss the weather there. Here summers are never really warm. U may turn your air and heat on all in the same day and this year we got 16 in. of snow, I thought it was never going to go away. It gets depressing. But, Im here for my husband. I just wish My kids could grow up down there. People aren"t that nice here. Just about every woman I know has Bypoler... lol sp? Bad!
