Default Funky(in a good way) parts of Jackson, MS

I'm considering a relocation to Jackson, from Pennsylvania, and I was wondering if the city had any cool, funky neighborhoods. Thanks

I'd like to add that I did visit the city back in June, and was pleasantly surprised. However, I didn't get to explore as much as I would have liked, as I was at the whim of my friend, and she wasn't able to get off work much while I was there.

Try looking at this thread - I think Belhaven may be what you're looking for.

Fondren is a good possibility for you too. It is considered an "artsy" nieghborhood if that's what you're looking for.

Thanks for the replies. My friend did mention Fondren. We did drive through the neighborhood, and I liked what I saw. But, like I said, we weren't able to explore as much as I would have liked.

Fondren is definitely up your alley. I live here now and love it. Downtown Jackson is also starting to make a comeback, so now is the time to buy there, even though there's not much to buy, most lease/rent space...

I would be renting long term. Is there such a thing as rent to own down there? Are any property owners willing to do that, that you know of? Many property owners in my area of the country are willing to make agreements like that.

If home prices have clearly hit bottom in Fondren or Belhaven, then a lease option or rent to buy can work. But in many parts of the country, prices are continuing to fall, and in a rent to own, you are typically agreeing to a price, agreed upon now, that you can exercise within a couple of years...Yes, it has it's advantages in that the extra rent you're paying goes toward downpayment, but unless you find a real good deal, be careful.

Thanks, I'm aware of the pros and cons of renting-to-own.

Thanks again, to those that replied. Keep chiming in, I'll continue to check back here.

As far as rent to own in downtown, I have no idea, as it is just starting to bloom and there is not much just yet. The housing market dilemma that seems to hitting the rest of the US hasnt really affected the housing market here. Prices may not be going up right now, but they're certainly not falling. That is one good thing about Mississippi for all those taking notes. As for rent to own in Fondren, you can usually get house payments that are lower than rental payments. I bought my house back in June with no down payment, if that helps you out any.
