Subdivisions in Southaven/Olive Branch Area
My husband and I (and our 4 kids) are currently living in an apartment in Southaven while we wait for our home to sell in the Little Rock area. Our kids (Kindergarten, 1st grade, 4th grade and 7th grade) are attending Desoto Central schools and everything is going well. We originally planned to buy a home in Hernando, but now are reconsidering since our kids are liking their schools, we are near our church, and my husband's job in Memphis (on Holmes Road) is just north of the stateline which makes for a short commute.
I would like any opinions about subdivisions in Southaven (specifically, those that attend Desoto Central schools (I realize the attendance zones are changing as the area grows) and Olive Branch.
We need to stay very close to $200K AND have 4 bedrooms so I know that many of the new subdivisions are out of our price range. I am very familiar with browsing the MLS listings, but really appreciate the input of people who know the area better than I do (we have only been here since August).
Thanks in advance for the info!

Just get out and drive. I'm in Belle Pointe which is right on the Southaven/OB line. If you get past this area, I would assume that the kids would probably end up in Pleasant Hill elementary. There may be a few houses that are in your price range. I know some have been on the market for well over a year. There are some neighborhoods on the east side of Getwell and south of Church Road. Also look at the north Side of Goodman on Getwell.
When we moved from Little Rock back in 2000, it took four months to sell our house. If you haven't noticed, there are hundreds of people with ties to Arkansas in this area. I've started looking for Razorback stickers and license plates over the last year. I can't get out on the road without seeing a car with a hog somewhere on it. Even last week, I found out there is a hog fan in this neighborhood besides me. But I'm still the only one around with the 4 foot tall, red "A" with a razorback jumping through it standing in my front yard.

MissyLou - there are several homes in Deerchase, Snowden Grove and the PUD section of Dickens Place that are well under the $200,000 mark. Like Robert said, drive around these areas. That is the best way to see if an area might be right for your family.

This is a nice and quiet area of town with the exception of the neighborhoods right near the park. I know there have been noise complaints during concerts but that is only during a handful of evenings during the year. I can sometimes hear the shows from my house but I'm usually there close to the front row!
Traffic is crazy around the school in the morning and afternoon. I just avoid going out during those times. It's also very nice to have everthign we need in the area. I very seldom make it to Southaven proper. We have a Kroger for groceries and a Target just down the road for everything else. There is a new video and game rental store near Kroger. There is also a nice assortment of restaurants from McDonald's ($) to The Chop House ($$$$$$).
I've heard from the police that they like to be assigned to this area since it is so quiet. Other than a few speeders on the road, this area is relatively safe.

Robert,
Thanks for the info. Our house has been on the market since JANUARY with not one offer. Things are definitely not looking any more promising since all the financial gloom and doom we are experiencing.
As for the Arkansas connection, the first couple of weeks we were here I would get so excited to see cars with Razorback license plates, etc.! I felt like I should introduce myself to every one of them, as if to say, "I'm like you!" I'm a lot more used to seeing it now, but you are right about there being a lot of Razorback fans in the area; and because I had to change to MS tags in order to keep my kids in school, I ordered a personalized plate that reads HOGFANS!

I hope you get that one. I know there is a red truck with a HOGFAN license and a Dodge with SOOOIE on it.

You might want to post in the TN - Memphis forums as well. You can get some good advice there from people that live in the area and a much better moderator as well (a little more honest exchange of opinions and ideas).
