Just curious, what don't you like about the North Carolina mountains? That's one of the places I am considering retiring (or at least was considering before my 401k tanked). Most people I know seem to think that area is the best thing since spaghetti-o's.

Its too slow for me and that's not what I want. But I'm stuck here for now and just biding my time.

Life's too short to worry about every silly little thing that someone can come up with and call it 'rude' or offensive. If that person's ego is so incredibly fragile that they are angered by such an innocent offhand gesture then that's their problem, and nobody should waste time worrying about their reaction. Nobody should walk on eggshells. They can get over it.

I agree 100 % MAXCHUS. Every retail place you go to in greenville, the employees act as if you owe them a favor for letting you spend your money there, no respect, talking on the phone or texing but taking your money at the same time with no thank you or come again, as it used to be.They could care less if you come there and spend your money again.If it's anything rude is the people working in these places.

I have moved away from Greenville, Ms a few years ago after living there my whole life. First of all after leaving I do realize Greenville is ahhh unique. I do miss home but there is a lot of things I don't miss. First off this is just from my experience: Washington School is wonderful and well worth the money.. If you guys don't realize it the tuition is not that much at all. After moving even though my children attend public schools now I did check on many private schools and was floored to find out the tuition where I live now is at least twice as high. The houses are so inexpensive there. You just have to have the means or luck to get a good job.. I love the small town atmosphere. But with the good there is bad.. The town is so small that everyone knows everyones business for 5 generations back, but speak of it only in whispers..(I hate that part) . I have been mugged there but felt lucky I wasn't hurt.. In fact one year visiting there my kids were at the carnival in the G'mall parking lot and was subjected to open gun fire,,just out of the blue this fight breaks out and shots were fired,,right beside my children and everyone else....That was scary but I was more furious than scared at the time, furious as we lay belly down in the parking lot...You know it bad when you train your children to run to the car when out at night as if we were taking cover, but when you grow up in that enviornment it all seems normal...I am really not afraid of living in Greenville even through all the bad, just wish it was easier to make a living there. I could go on and on...and I probably will in my next post...Later Gator

Oh and back to the earlier post ha ha ...What is rude is not even getting a simple "Thank You" when you pay... I always thought when you worked in the public you were suppose to greet the customer and say thank you no matter what. But what I get a lot of in Greenville Ms is a lot of attitude and little service...Not every place so dont get stirred up but mostly clerks will ignore you and talk to someone else while slooooowly waiting on you, I too wll put my money down being tired of holding it out...It burns me up !!!! If you don't like your job, let someone else have it and spare the public your misery.

This was the very event that made me decide I'd had enough. We were at that carnival when it happened as well. You can't let your kids go anywhere for fear they may not make it home. We are all aware it happens anywhere and everywhere but face it, Greenville is not a major metropolis... just a small lost town that was once a great place to live.

The Delta is an interesting place, but I would not want to live down there.

When I want to know about a city, I look it up on Wikipedia. I always scroll down to the place called "Demographics". This is the demographic report for Greenville Ms.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 41,633 people, 14,784 households, and 10,422 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,548.8 people per square mile (598.0/km²). There were 16,251 housing units at an average density of 604.6/sq mi (233.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 28.92% White, 69.60% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.71% of the population.

There were 14,784 households out of which 35.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.8% were married couples living together, 27.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.34.

In the city the population was spread out with 31.4% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 85.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,928, and the median income for a family was $30,788. Males had a median income of $29,801 versus $20,707 for females. About 25.7% of families and 29.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 38.2% of those under age 18 and 23.6% of those age 65 or over.

I am white, and I prefer not to live in a city that is almost 70% black. Studies have shown that cities with majority black populations have higer crime rates and a lower quality of life.

I think people have this mestique about small towns, like they are just like Mayberry, when in fact, many of these towns can be dangerous with lots of drug trafficking, sometimes with the quiet consent of the poorly paid law enforcement officials there. The Delta town of Helena is so bad that it has a curfew in a high crime neighborhood to control the drug dealing and violence.

More or less 30% of the people in the town live below the poverty line, with almost 1/3 of the households headed by a single female parent. How many of these people are on welfare? How many of these single mothers have had more than one baby? How many of these 1/3 impoverished people are actually overweight since most cheap food is high in calories. What kind of schools service a town that is one third poor and one third illegitimate?

If you look at the demographic of a similarly populated city of Minot N.D., which is 93% white, one will see that the illegitmacy and poverty rate is one third of Greenville Ms. Minot is not a rich or great place, it's in the middle of nowhere North Dakota.

Go to the Delta. Eat the catfish and the BBQ ribs. Pick some cotton bolls off the side of the road if you are from the far north and have never seen it before. Go to the casinos. But realize that the Delta is more or less Zimbabwe and the tables have turned.

I think alotta people have this "mistique" about small towns.. I know I do, but I put it into reality, and just know sometimes, there are some small towns I shouldn't or don't want to be in.

BUT, to compared Minot, North Dakota to Greenville, MS? Thats like apples to oranges... day and night...
