My husband's friend who is a policeman just moved away from Greenville. He said that he was literally scared for his life and never knew when he went out on a call if it would be his last. He said after 10 years, he couldn't take it anymore. He said bullets fly all over the place and gangs are rampant. He moved to save his life.

Well let me try.....I moved from Greenville when i was 14, around 1978. I remember swimming in Lake Ferguson, fireworks down my the levee, cruising around Sonic and playing with friends. Grew up on Rose Street and our parents had to beat us to come in and go to bed.....I really have the best memories. Then we moved to Monroe, LA. I went back a few years later 83/84 and it was a completely different town. Alot of drugs, I mean alot. I don't know if a gang took over or what. Fast forward a few more years to early nineties and I went back again. Depression, stores boarded up, couldn't believe it. I haven't been back since 1998, but, I for one can tell you that back in the 70's, I have great memories of the place but it's true, I know that the town has gone through a transormation for some reason.
I will hold on to my memories.

Greenville YMCA
I would like to post something Greenville has that is positive. The Greenville YMCA is one of the best things Greenville has going for it. When we lived in Greenville a year ago it was my regular routine to do morning work outs there. The staff and facilites there are excellant. And I truly miss the regular morning folks that worked out there as well. There is no Y where we moved but something similar operated by the hospital that is top-notch as well. The Greenville Y is a treasure for the city.

I lived in Greenville '86 through'89 with the Boeing project and it was not a bad place at all. Skiing on lake Ferguson, fishing on lake Washington, BBQ at Nick's, drinks at C & G, onion rings at Stoneville at Ciceros........
Lived one year on Lake Ferguson and two years on Sudan and never had any trouble. It is a real shame that small livable towns are being dragged down and that the local Governments will do nothing to stop it. I suppose it is the fault of the self serving politicians or the people who do not vote them out.

Maybe we should start a new thread of things and places we like or miss in Greenville.

Now there's an idea.....I miss the fountain on the levee! Way back when, that was a popular place for dates to go "parking" (a lover's lane of sorts where you can get some sugar from your date)...I miss being able to "go parking" without the fear of being robbed...I miss the Marina...I miss the Paramount Theater and the Marion Parlor...I miss Strazi's and Dan's Bar BQ...I miss being able to just go to the levee and park on top to watch the boaters and fishermen or just enjoy the scenery...it's illegal to do so now! This is fun.......

Didn't I hear that the CowPen burned a couple of years back?
My family and I left the Delta for the Tupelo area about 4 years ago- the restaurants are our ONLY regret. Greenville and Cleveland had some truly outstanding places to eat.

I think they're going to re-build. With the new businesses that are supposed to be built around the new bridge The CowPen would benefit a bunch.
