We may be moving to the Memphis-N. Mississippi area next year from Minnesota. Our son (10) plays hockey. Just wondering if anyone has experience with the youth hockey program in Desoto cty? Also looking at schools and real estate. Our $$$ is going to go a lot farther in TN or MS!!!!!
(I posted this to the TN forum also.)

You aren't talking about ice hockey, are you? That's not real big in this area.

Default Yes - ice hockey

There is a youth hockey organization that is based out of the Desoto Civic Center. I'm just looking to connect with people that have kids in the program. Who would have known that there was youth hockey in Mississippi!

Not I

I take that back, there use to be one here in Jackson, but the establishment shut down earlier this year or last.

Compared to MN, you will find that youth hockey is basically non-existant. I am a Minnesotan who spent 9 years in Desoto Co. working at the casinos. I 'heard' about a couple of local leagues in Memphis, but never met a single person who had a child playing hockey.

I lived in Memphis, Southaven & Olive Branch. I would definitely look at Desoto Co. or Collierville only. You will be in for quite a culture shock if you are born & raised MN/midwest.

Anywhere in Memphis is a culture shock for a midwesterner, I think!

Desoto is pretty nice. Generally very nice people. IMHO, your shopping options are extremely limited if you are used to having a variety close by (for example, only one commercial big-box bookstore). You'll end up going to Germantown to shop for some things. I ended up using Amazon more often that not!

If you are a church goer it'll be much easier for you to integerate and get to know people than if you are not.

We went to RiverKings games often - they're fun and not terribly expensive.

We considered youth hockey for our daughter but it's so expensive we ended up going with other sports.
