Pulled this out of the dust.

Does anyone live in this area or is anyone familiar with it? I found a house there I'm interested in and would like honest opinions from anyone that knows the area.

Since I've lived in Tupelo and used US78 to go to Memphis on a regular basis, I used to go through Hickory Flat all the time. Used to, because they 4-laned 78 and bypassed Hickory Flat, so now we don't stop.

I've never liked that town. I'm sure there are fine folks there, it's just that it always struck me as a place where outsiders would always remain outside; not kin to anyone; from somewhere else.

You ever been there?

Never been there. Just found a house on the internet that we like and were interested in what the area was like. Thanks for your thoughts! Will keep looking around!

It's a very white, rural town. I think Sen. Wicker's father is from there originally.

Back in the '70s when they were pushing all the counties to consolidate their schools for racial reasons, there was always an objection that the roads between Hickory Flat and Ashland were just too dangerous for bus traffic. Needless to say, there was never any effort to improve those roads! So the Hickory Flat schools are virtually all white, and there are people from Ashland and Holly Springs who sneak or move into the area to attend school there.

But there is nothing there except a truck stop and a few stores, and if you aren't from there I just think it would be a terrible place to suddenly find oneself if you weren't connected. It would be a real culture shock for 98 percent of America.

But if you are interested, you should visit and see for yourself.
