I'm sure there was. We're about 200 miles north of Jackson and there were trees blown down and shingles blown from roofs.

This is the South. Someone in Jackson has had tornado damage.
Jackson, MS NOAA tornado statistics

Looking up that site, I learned that the South is known as Dixie alley. Looking at some of those graphs of the comparison to the wider known 'tornado alley' in the great plains, we have more tornadoes. Should this scare you away? No at all. That would be like avoiding California because of potential earthquakes or the north because blizzards scare you. There were more people injured and killed in car accidents in MS yesterday than were injured and killed in MS in all of 2007.

For the most part, Jackson faired ok during Katrina, other than losing electricity for 3-10 days (depending on what part). Jackson was on the weaker side (west side) of the storm so it faired better than it would have if it were on the east side of the eye. That is why Hattiesburg, Meridian and other eastern MS cities got a lot of damage.
