Comparing Jackson to Los Angeles is like comparing apples to oranges. You have to consider the size of the cities and the population. Maybe it doesn't seem like such a dangerous place to someone moving from LA, but to those of us who lived there for a long time it sure seems dangerous. The newspaper this morning says there were 6 murders and 3 injuries in the last 11 days in Jackson. That may not seem like a lot for LA, but it is a lot for Jackson. I stayed in Jackson probably longer than I should have because it was my home. There were plenty of African Americans in my neighborhood long before I moved. I moved because a number of houses were broken into as well as both of my cars. I don't know the answer for the problems in the public schools. I do know that those kids deserve a much better education than what they're getting. I agree that we are often stereotyped and we do live in a beautiful state, but I will never agree that Jackson is a safe place to live right now. Perhaps, with some new leadership, that can all be changed in the future.

HI Aunt Bee,

I respect your opinion and I wasn't actually addressing you.

It was that other lady who just sounded so negative in saying
there's absolutely nothing good about the Jackson area.

You make a lot of good points.

P.S.

I wish I knew how to change my name on here to CLAUDIA
now that like it here and decided to keep posting.

What a dummy I was to pick a man's name. LOL

I was born 28 years ago in the Jackson,MS area, I grew up and was raised in Jackson, I knew Jackson was certainly not as exciting, and did not offer some of the things that larger cities in the south did and still do. When I became a teenager, I was so busy with playing sports year round, and chasing girls that I kinda forgot about how "boring" I thought Jackson was, when I was a little kid. I am not referring to Brandon, Pearl, Madison, Flowood, Ridgeland etc.. We lived in North-east Jackson in between Old Canton Road and Lakeland Drive. We lived in an "upscale" subdvision which when I was growing up was one of the nicer areas in the Jackson Metro area.

My father was an Insurance Broker and he still is, my mom was a stay at home mom and my sister and I attended Jackson Prep so yes maybe we were an "ideal" family. Then I went off to college in 1999 to Ole Miss and my sister did the same two years later, I did come home a couple times a semester during my college year. I don't know what happened or what trend was started but in 1999 northeast jackson just took a turn for the worse, crime became a norm and the area was becoming extremely run down, I understand crime is everywhere and still exist. Then we really started to see the "massive growth" of Brandon, Flowood, Madison, Ridgeland etc...

My parents have entirely left Jackson, relocated to Oxford,MS I have started my own financial services brokerage in Nashville,Tn and I reside in Brentwood,TN. My sister is a lawyer in Florence, Alabama and she has her own firm.

Looking back on my childhood in Jackson,MS I really enjoyed being raised in Jackson (even if I did not realize it at the time). However, I would not recommend anyone relocating to Jackson today, especially to raise a family. There are way too many other great southern cities to consider. In order to get Jackson moving again, the city will need someone who understands what Mississippi is, and what Mississippians are like, someone that understands the Jackson and Mississippi economy. They must realize that Jackson must become a great southern city that is known as "Jackson" not as the little brother or sister to Memphis,TN and New Orleans, LA.

Just my thoughts and opinions, they may not be worth anything as I have never been compensated for opinions. Make it great out there tdoay!
