CAn anyone recommend some good locally owned, non-chain restaurants?

Thanks!

Some people like Vanelli's on N. Gloster. Personally, I wouldn't cross the street to eat there.

As far as I am concerned, the very best restaurant in Tupelo (and maybe even in N. Mississippi) is Park Heights. It is on E. Main, near the Bancorp South Center. They have a web site but I can't remember the url offhand; you can google it and find them. Food and service are outstanding. Atmosphere is elegant, with soft lighting, linen tablecloths, fine china and candles.

IV's is good- but I haven't been since they moved to the new location across from Ballard Park.
If you want sushi, Shogun's is really good.

Be sure to visit Johnnie's Drive In, Tupelo's oldest restaurant, for a Johnnie Burger.

Don't forget about the Dairy Kream on Main Street down from Johnnie's. Great ice cream treats and roadside-stand burgers. What is a slugburger made of? I see the place in Corinth when I'm there and I was told there's no meat in it?

The only Bill's I know of is in Amory, and a lot of people do like their burgers. I ate there once and thought it was pretty over-rated. The meat was tasteless.

There are different recipes for dough burgers, slugburgers, etc. but they are all basically meat with fillers, flour, eggs, bread, spices. I've been told this started during the Depression to stretch meat.

We went to a place on hwy 45 towards Corinth called Catfish Country. Either I was starving or it was really good. But seriously it was good. They had the traditional fish but also sirloin steak and fresh vegtables and great desserts. I highly recommend it..... if you like fish!
