Default Might have to move to Jackson

Hello all,
I might have to move to Jackson because my elderly mother lives there and is not doing so well. I am no spring chicken myself - 54, took an early retirement but will still need a job. I have the following questions.
1. How is the health care? I currently live in se florida and the health care here is awful. I DO have health issues, some quite serious. I would appreciate any comments/recommendations you may have.
2. I'M A NORTHERNER. I am so far away from being a southern belle it isn't even funny. I don't go to church, curse like a truck driver, but am educated, intelligent, funny and attractive. Will I be able to make a single friend?
3. I am currently single. Are there any decent available men in my age bracket there who would be interested in someone in their age bracket? My opinion has always been that women are smart and they don't let the nice guys stay out there for long. That's probably true everywhere. I'm not looking to get married, but I do like male companionship. Is there any hope?

Hope no one takes offense to this, but I simply must ask. I love my mom deeply and she moved there only recently as well because she has family there. I don't consider her family my family, we are worlds apart.

Does anyone think there might be hope for me in ole miss? I really AM a nice person btw.

Hi Joanie,

There are a LOT of major hospitals in the Jackson metropolitan area.

As far as finding a job, I'm not the person to ask because I don't
work a regular job and never have in life.

I don't know what to tell you about most of your questions--but there
are literally HUNDREDS of Info Topics on Jackson, MS around these
forums, so you should just pack as many in as possible.

I myself have raised some questions about "dating/social mores" and
never gotten responses either. It's almost like people here pretend
that nobody down here ever has sex and it doesn't exist. LOL!

This is the Bible belt and little by little, in very subtle ways, you start to see what that means.

My personal belief is that if you WANT to adapt and love it here...then
you will. It's really all up to you.

But it is a "task" figuring out what your life will be now and what YOU
will make of it.

In about a year, you should be alright.

Otherwise, something's wrong with YOU...not the place.

Enjoy spending as much quality time as you can with your mother
and take advantage of the lush greenery and nature here.

Just the intimacy of having delicious meals with one's mom is quite
thrilling and fulfilling for me. I don't know if you're like that and enjoy
cooking new things.

But it's nice and slow here; it's soothing. And it gives you time to
really think things out.

GOOD LUCK and BLESSINGS.

I don't know what field you want to work in so I really can't answer about finding a job. Since you don't go to church you should probably try to find some other organizations to join if you want to meet men (unless you're into the bar scene). Move with the attitude that you will like it here and I think you'll adapt just fine. You might want to tone down the language a little in public though.

Joanie wish I could help. Please don't mistake the lack of response as not caring. This forum is a little quieter than some other bigger states.
Sometimes it takes a few days to get a response. I've only lived in MS for 8 months so I don't know the answers to most of your questions.
You can find your place here if you want. There is always online dating
if you notice prospects are slim in the Jackson area.

Thanks for your response. And to the others as well (yes Aunt Bee I WILL watch the language in public). I have 20+ years of experience in the field of PR, which is a career that you burn out in after that amount of time (or I did anyway). I would love to get a writing job of some kind, but to be honest I could be a receptionist or retail clerk as well. I have a retirement income so that helps. But here in south FL they want to pay $8 an hour for these jobs and expect you to possess all the computer skills of an IT college graduate. I'ts ridiculous, it truly is. I'm not big on on-line dating. I tried it briefly when I lived in Albuquerque and while my results were not as bad as some (My hairdresser here in FL does that - one guy said he was a pilot and was always calling her telling her, "Oh, I'm just leaving Paris now..." She found out he was NOT a pilot and was, in fact, unemployed and living with his mother. Her latest guy hid the fact he had a child for 6 months..but this is Florida, land of con artists and phonies) I wasn't exactly thrilled. People lie on those dating sites, they really do. What I especially loved about them was when a guy would post a picture that was 10 years old. But, I'm also sort of old fashioned in that arena, I like to meet people the old fashioned way, through friends, work, etc. All I really want is to live in a pretty place (which I know Miss is) that is affordable, willing to pay you a living wage, have people be friendly enough to you to make eye contact and flash an occassional smile, and not judge me harshly because I'm not a native and don't have a lot of religious bumper stickers on my car. (Not that there's anything wrong with that if that's what someone wants to do, it's a free country, but you know what I'm saying.)

You probably could find something in retail pretty easily. If you want just something parttime in the spring and summer, the Mississippi Braves hire a lot of older people. You might even meet some men there.

That's a fabulous idea. Pardon my ignorance but who are the Miss. braves? A minor league baseball team perhaps?

Yes, the M-Braves are a local minor league team with a nice facility just outside of Jackson. You mention you would like to write... I would suggest contacting the Jackson Free Press. They are an alternative newspaper that you may find some work with.

Thank u so much for your response and kind words. I don't know how to direct message someone on this forum (could be part of the job problem with lack of good computer skills) but how did you get away with never working a regular job? U don't have to respond, but more power to u!
