Okolona is very small and I don't think there's anything going on there. Fortunately, Tupelo is only 30 minutes away and Oxford is just a little over an hour's drive.

Yeah Okolona is the deadest town i've ever been to in the world. My father in law currently lives there he has 280 acres of hunting land, pretty impressive.
I loved Tupelo, seemed like there was a bit more to do for someone my age being young.

I thought you hated Mississippi judging by some of your previous posts?

None of my business, but ------
Might be none of my business but it is a new year and we should all let bygones be bygones. I have had disagreements with Scotslass in the past and she is now on my friends list. Folks have the right to change their minds and opinions about people and the things they might have said in the past.
Just curious about why someone with a screen name (Tama) would end a post with another name (Sarah) ? I think that anyone posting on a message board has to have pretty thick skin and not take stuff folks say too seriously. I've just sent happy new years greetings to everyone on my C.D. Friends List and now I'm wishing everyone else a happy new year. (Except the leaders of N. Korea, Iran, and Russia) !

Please refrain from criticizing each other as people so that we can keep this thread going ; criticize the post instead . Thanks. Happy New Year , Mississippi !

I don't know much about Okolona, but in March our weather can be wonderfully mild (70's) or if it's one of those freakish years that comes around every blue moon you could have a foot of snow (highly unlikely though). March is tornado season though.
Tupelo is a nice town to live in. But I'd rather live in Hernando (Desoto County) or Oxford. I live in Olive Branch (also Desoto County, but closer to Memphis). While it's nice here and the people are great, I find it lacking in much personality--too generic and I miss the hills of northeast Mississippi. Since you're coming from Scotland I would think you would miss the hills as well. If you ever get the chance, go to Tishomingo State Park in Tishomingo County (very northeastern county of Mississippi). That's near my home in Belmont. It's lovely. And while you're at it, stay at the Belmont Hotel. Call ahead and reserve a downstairs room. Last I checked they cost less than $30 and are the best rooms. They are furnished in antiques. The hotel is the longest continually running hotel in the state of Mississippi and it is quaint. But when you go to Belmont, expect country people and small-town ways. Be open to them and don't expect them to be cosmopolitan and you will love it. Step into the Belmont Cafe for southern lunch and get your hair washed and dried at Fancy Fixins salon (I'm not making this stuff up!) for a bit of small town gossip. ( I don't recommend getting a cut or color there, however, unless you like big, teased hair!) If you're there on a Sunday, go to church at First Baptist Church for a taste of evangelical, small town life. My dad lives next to the church and it's where I grew up in between the church and the funeral home, and just like in "My Girl" I played in the funeral home with my friend whose family owns it. Go to Wood Sales for a good price on just about anything and a little bit of everything...I think they have a website. I know this is a weird travel recommendation, but I thought you might like an insider's view. I know when I travel I always want to do what the locals do, not visit touristy places. Hope "y'all" have a good time in my beloved Mississippi. (And by the way, if you like our sweet tea, visit McAllisters. It's a chain all over Mississippi in bigger towns. It's the best. I like mine with lemon. And a nice scot lass has to love the name, right?) Enjoy!

I just thought of something else that might be helpful to you. Check out youtube.com and look for Mississippi Roads posts. I especially like the one on northeast Mississippi. Search for Mississippi Hills MPB Mississippi Roads. And you might like Pickwick Lakes as well as Tishomingo State Park if you like to hike. Tishomingo would be my preference for hiking, but Pickwick has lots of water, obviously. My kids love to walk through the town of Belmont. Not exactly hiking, but fun all the same.

Of course, its a strong name
I love the countryside and hot climates, the two go very well with me though I can't believe you guys actually get temps in the 70s in March That's brilliant. Here its around 40-50. Too darn cold for me.
I'm going to check out the Trace Parkway, my fiances aunt lives in Houlka and her husband is a game warden. From the pictures that have been posted to me that area looks fantastic for driving through and walking.
Also i'd love to check out Oxford, probably the only thing that comes close to where im from, the buildings look really nice there and there seems to be some nightlife - suits me too. Hey I'm Scottish what do you expect?
I called my in laws last night and seemingly i've to look forward to home made country cooking, fishing for catfish, scenic walks and drives, town jumping and meeting more of the locals and sampling local foods. I miss sweet tea though, I must have drank gallons when I was there last time.
I was told to check out Bay springs lake, It is supposidly very beautiful and good for watersports.
Do you guys honestly get alot of tornados? They freak me out.
P.S I just wanted to point out that its been a VERY tough time for my fiance and me. Its a long story but my fiance is qualified in mechanical engineering and had jobs lined up in Oklahoma and Colorado. If you watch the news and see the price of oil its dropped quite a bit. They began to close rigs down in those areas and we suffered for it. My fiance lost both jobs. As hard as it may be for a certain individual to take me seriously well that is the truth. So my family have asked us to come to Mississippi and help us. Like everyone keeps saying, its a new year out with the old and in with the new. I know i said things in the past but lets just leave it in the past. I am not perfect and only human and i do make mistakes.
I don't see a problem with us living in Mississippi, granted Okolona is dead, its too quiet for me i think Tupelo is more my scene.
But please don't hold this against me, I am very sorry for what was said over 2 years ago, yes it was that long ago and some people keep bringing it up and it will never rest. Like beating a dead horse, its stupid.
Some people are only good for causing trouble, its nasty and very rude.
