Default Purvis, MS - need opinions, information, etc.

We are considering a property just outside of Purvis with 20+ acres. Don't know much except one fellow I talked with 2 years ago said that he wished he could live in Purvis. Have been through Hattiesburg several times on the way to the coast, but never got to the small town of Purvis. TAMA lives in Hattiesburg, so if you wish to comment (as well as any others), please do so. Thanks.

TigerFan--I don't know much about Purvis except it is a very small town with the basics only in the way of services and goods. Depending on where you will be--the area is probably poised for some growth because of the expansion west into Lamar County of the rapidly developing Pine Belt. This might be good or bad, I guess? It has a medical clinic, I think, and its own school system. How far you are out in the countryside and in what direction will determine what type of driving distance you will have to access specialized medical care, hospitals, shopping, or dining. That will be in Hattiesburg unless you are really south or west of Purvis. You will have a quiet rural life with probably a maximum 30 to 45 minute drive to movies and shops. I really don't have too much first-hand info for you as I have only gone to Purvis to pay for my car tag--it is the county seat!

TAMA - thanks for your feedback. Could you tell me your impression of Purvis as to cute little town (I know it's small), clean, not so clean looking, etc. I know there is a cattle stockyard auction there, but don't know about the appearance of the town in general. Thanks.

I only know the immediate downtown area and close in housing. I haven't really been to the residential areas away from downtown. TigerFan--this is only my opinion but I think of Purvis as being very rural and to tell you the truth it hits me as a kind of dusty crossroads country town. I stand to be corrected. It isn't the cute little town with the awning covered shops and park benches and planters filled with flowers. There is a golf course and Beaver Lake with some nice homes around it. It isn't very charming or attractive but rather functional with good solid people--again my own opinion. You would be quite near to other areas though that would offer nice shops, bakeries, stores, and malls. However, if you are looking for what so many people seem to be looking for which is an old-fashioned town with a center that one can walk to and shop and have an ice cream and visit or ride bikes to and have a picnic on the park grass, Purvis will disappoint, I fear.

Smile info on purvis, missisippi

we evacuated to hattiesburg during hurricane katrina, in little black creek waterpark outside of purvis. purvis IS as you observed rural, but compared to other cities around it such as lumberton, baxterville, it is quite large as rural ms.cities go. crime is low,as is crowding, the main shopping area is downtown purvis(2BLOCKS LONG 2BLOCKS WIDE),rameys supermarket, purvis police station, lbrary, bank, antique stores, barbaque restaurant, radio shack,2 video stores, 2dollar stores, dominos pizza, mcdonalds, post office, mini maul containing consurvative but nice sit down casual dress restaurant, shell & bp gas stations, dentist office, live stock abound on private land along highways, the people are generally friendly and polite. its a 12 to 15 min. drive to hattiesburg, where we use to go to the walmart on highway 49,there is also one of the largest fema trailer storage sites for trailers being mothballed, until needed again. purvis can be acessed via interstate 59, highway 11, and other backroads, private horses are all over the place as this seems to be very popular,as is highschool football(p.s.:they even have a pretty nice stadium for highschool football).my email adress is gribet@earthlink.net,love to hear from you about your desicion

Thanks for the info. Have not made a decision yet. Looking also at one town in eastern MS close to the Alabama line. Will keep you in mind on our decision.
