Hernando is very nice. So are the other north MS cities of Olive Branch and Southaven. All three have been discussed a LOT here. Try southaven.org for a nice overview of the city.

Thoughts re: Living in MS
In Mississippi, known as the hospitality state, you will usually find that people treat you as you treat them and color of skin is really not as the media presents it.
The areas you mentioned are basically rural. Pros: Outdoor activities are handy or not too far a drive. Several state parks with recreational facilities nearby. Great hunting and fishing, one of the major tourist attractions, too.
Some of the people are very educated, some are not. However that doesn't mean a lack of intelligence.
Crime is not a big issue, mostly non-violent.
Chrisitanity is the major religion there, but people do respect your choice.
The driving to large metro areas for theater, shopping, is not that difficult at all and simplicity of lifestyle is a trade off many consider worth it.
It has a family friendly atmosphere. Lower taxes on property.
Cons: If you are looking for a high energy, impersonal attitude, or isolationism, then this won't probably be your cup of tea.
Access to most activties do require a car or motorized vehicle.
Pro or Con, Your Call: People do get to know you by name. How you use that is up to you. The attitude you enter with will be important. If you extend the hand of hospitality and kindness, you will be greeted the same. Unfortunately, the media has given a stigma to the rest of the world, so some people will be guarded thinking that you may see them in a bad light. That is overcome easily by your appreciation of the people and area and expressing it. As anywhere, a foreigner is most welcome when accepting the local customs with out the "Where I'm from we did it a better way." You will be respected and considered an asset to the state if you are as your posts seem to be.
Btw, that area of MS rarely has any serious weather related problems.
Contact the State of MS for a packet of info for people considering moving to MS.
Hope this helps a bit. I would love to visit Scotland. I have McPherson ancestors and am a genealogist.
Bus, spiders, etc are easily controlled. Spider bites are rare, very rare!
Sorry for the length of post.

Shopping in mississippi
Hello All! Just wanted to tell everyone what a beautiful place Mississippi is! I have lived in Mississippi all my life, and although I have traveled some, Mississippi is most beautiful. Our lifestyle is laid back, and we love our nature trails. If you are in Mississippi, be sure to stop by Water Valley where you will find a quaint little store named LILLY BELLS that carries antiques, retro and vintage accessories and jewelry of all kinds. The quaint little shop also has new designer clothing for 25.00 and under, regardless of what the price tag reads. When shopping LILLY BELLS you can have a homemade slice of cake on Thursdays and Fridays, and sample some of the gourmet foods that come and go quickly. LILLY BELLS is located at 405 Main STreet, and she caters to college students who love to shop for vintage and unique clothing, and she also buys gently used purses, smocked clothing, and slightly used furniture or antiques. Be sure and stop by you will be glad you did! Her prices are much CHEAPER than Oxford because of overhead.......

I lived for a couple of years in Gulfport and loved it! That was before Camille and Katrina, and all the beautiful anti-bellum homes were still along highway 90. That was also before all the gambling casinos.... Of course Katrina devastated the area, and I think with the exception of the big hotels and casinos, the rebuilding is going slowly.
I also love to visit Vicksburg and Natchez. None of you Mississippians mentioned living there, but I've wondered what it would be like. I love all the history and the homes. And I think everyone should at least visit there once and learn about "The Recent Unpleasantness" (known to some as the War of Northern Aggression, or the Civil War).
