It seems like the part of Mississippi on the Gulf and the southern part of the state are not as bad in terms of race relations as people would think. I think it is the same in the NE part of the state too. I think the problems come from the Delta, where my dad is from(Tchula) and the Eastern part of the state. Mississippi isn't as bad as people think in that regard.

usm2009 is on a distinguished road
Hattiesburg is not bad at all. It is one of the fastest growing areas in the state and even with the national economy in slum; Hattiesburg seems to hold up quite fine. I don't want to make Hattiesburg out to be some paradise, its not. We have USM, a typical large university, William Carey University, a privately owned Baptist college, and numerous other technical and juco schools. There are several restaurants and several outdoor activities. Within 30 minutes drive, there are (guessing) about 10 golf courses, 4 water parks (some natural, some commercial), Paul B Johnson state park (large lake, bbq, cabins, tent grounds, etc.), Longleaf Trace (old railroad track converted to a walking trail, running parallel is an equestrian trail). Hattiesburg is also the regional shopping hub, medical hub, and education hub for SE MS. As previously stated, being a college town, you shouldn't find problems being an interracial couple. Does Hattiesburg have problems, sure. But, don't believe everything you hear about MS, it's really not bad. Anywhere is what YOU make it. I think you'll enjoy not having to fight horrible traffic while being within close proximity to everything you need. If Hattiesburg doesn't have it, you’re a quick drive to NOLA, Jackson, or the coast. (When it's hot, you'll love being 2 hrs away from some of the countries prettiest beaches.)
