Why is everyone down on Southaven? I looked at the stats here on this site and they look good. What is the major issue and why?

Southhaven borders the Tennessee state line and is very close to the airport.
Lots of noise but above that is the close proximity to the crime which surrounds
the airport. There are good areas in Southhaven. I think most people are just
concerned that it will be overrun by crime located just north.

Houses are relatively inexpensive and there is plenty of shopping near. The main
east west road, goodman, is a traffic nightmare near all the shopping around
goodman and airways.

I have only lived here for 9 months but that is my take on the area.

My family and I are relocating to the Memphis area due to a Job transfer. We were looking at Southaven and olive branch, but are concerned about safety. Where is the best places to live near memphis? I have a young family and need a place that my children are safe.

Try Hernando...you can rent a place there while you figure out if its right for you...bigger commute though.

I have lived in the area for over 50 years. It is not Southaven, as a whole, that has a bad reputation. Mainly, the older parts of Southaven which are immediately south of the Memphis airport. The newer sections further south and east are much nicer.

However, I have to admit, I live south of Hernando because it is still quiet and country like. Another 10 years will change that.

.
muaddib is correct. It is just the influx of people that is to blame.
Southaven has an excellent police chief & is doing a good job, it is just hard to stay ahead of the curve.
For now Hernando is doing very well, but that will certainly change in the next few years.

I have lived in Southaven for over 20 years and owned a cleaning business here for the last 18 of those years. I love Southaven and the opportunities to raise a family with good schools, etc. are in your favor. The atmosphere is pretty friendly even after all this time. Every city has its hot spots for any crime and so forth, but the police department is excellent and I feel very safe both in my home and my business here. I love the small town feel of most areas in Southaven, and the big city amenities cannot be matched. You get the best of both worlds, but that is just my personal opinion.

All of Desoto County is relatively safe. It is when you cross over the Memphis border or the other county borders that you end up in "ANOTHER WORLD."

You may consider Walls, MS too. It's a little slower out here, typically larger yards (we have 1.5 acres and live in a subdivision), homes from 1800 sq ft+, and quick access to Memphis and Southaven area shopping. It's definitely quieter here

the only big problem with southaven is traffic especially on goodman rd but other than that, it's a good place to live and raise kids.
