Exclamation Relocating our family to jackson,ms area, have no idea!!! HELP!!!

We are looking at relocating to Mississippi, Jackson area. We have four boys, ages 8 to 6 months. They are homeschooled, so school districts aren't an issue. We need a safe area to rent, around $600 - $700 per month, if possible. My husband is willing to have up to around a 40 mile commute. That's about what he's commuting now. He's got a job possibility in the works now. However, he currently works in the privatized corrections field. What are the industries around there that he could also explore? He's willing to work overtime, in fact, he loves it. We just need to know where to look for safe housing...preferably a house, at least 3 BR needed, since we've got four kids...we love to be in the country, if that helps....any advice for us!!!!
THANKS!!!!!!!!

You husband might try one of the local law enforcement agencies for employment. There is also a large correctional facility in Rankin County. Pearl might be a good area to look for a house in that price range.

Thanks auntbee. I have another question about the area. We found a home for rent in Jackson. It's on Madison Street. Is that a safe area of town? From the Google map, it looks like it's in Northwest Jackson. Knowing nothing of the area, I hesitate to take a house that we know nothing about. It's a beautiful home. I'm not concerned with schools, just safety. Thanks for your help!!

Hi JHarrel

I live in Raymond, just west of Jackson. I moved here last year and love it so far. When I was looking for my house I considered Jackson.
I found 2-3 houses in Jackson that I considered. They looked nice. I was also concerned with crime.
I found it strange sometime I would be in a great Jackson neighborhood and then drive a few short blocks and I was in the hood.
My advise is that you really have to be here to know if that is the kind of area you want to live in.
There are very nice parts of Jackson that I still would live in. There are very nice parts of Jackson (for now) that I would never live in.
One house I looked at was on a lake. Due to it's closeness to the hood. it wouldn't sell and the owners were forced to drop the price below what I thought it was worth.
Google Earth has a feature called "Street View". It normally is turned off. Look in the layers section and find the little yellow person.
Make sure the box is checked. That way you can see a close up picture of the house on Madison. I'm not familiar with that area myself so I can't tell you anything about it.
Good Luck with the search.

I would not live anywhere in Jackson, but I know others would disagree. I don't think NW Jackson would be a very good area.

Speaking as somebody that located to Mississippi from out of state.....for your price range I would recommend Flowood or Ridgeland.

Stay away from Pearl.......unless you want to see car title for cash stores and payday loans businesses every 1/8 of a mile......

Living in Mississippi, outside of Madison, Ridgeland, Flowood......the pickings get very slim.

Have you heard the expression "you can't judge a book by its cover"? I thought I would never want to live in Pearl too. I changed my mind when I wanted to move back here and found I couldn't afford a house at the Reservoir or in Brandon. There are some nice quiet neighborhoods here and I now live in one. Yes, there are some places that are rundown, but it is a much older area than Madison or the Rez. I don't have to shop in Pearl. I can be at Dogwood on Lakeland in 15 minutes. I feel very safe here. The police presence is very visible.

First, Madison Street is in the Belhaven District and everyone knows about Belhaven (positive reputation). The surrounding cities around Jackson are just as nice, but some them you have to "pay to play - Madison, Ridgeland, Flowood" and its not going to be worth it. Based on your information you all seem like a neutral family when dealing with rent cost and Pearl or Clinton is not a bad idea.

My family will be moving to Jackson. I will be working in town I really liked Fondren/Belhaven (seemingly a little more artsy) area but haven't decided between the city and suburbs. I have two small children who will attend private schools. How bad is the commute during rush hour from Ridgeland into Jackson and does anyone know how taxes will differ between Fondren/Belhaven and Madison/Ridgeland? Thanks
