Hi MIssissippi friends,

For my sister's 40th birthday, my brother and I are taking her on a long weekend getaway in late March. Some of our criteria included nice weather (were from NJ and it's currently snowing), good music and nightlife, great food, and possibly places to hike or explore during the day. Are there any cities in MS that are safe and could possibly offer this?

Thanks so much advance,
Jeremy

Go to the Coast. Can't offer hiking there, but food and drink is plentiful. Ocean Springs is somewhere people have been raving about lately. Plus you got the casinos if you're into that.

Look into the state parks if hiking is what you want, but that generally is going to be from Jackson north in the hills.

New Orleans. There's no hiking per se but there are some great places to walk in Audubon Park and City Park. You can walk on top of the Mississippi River levee on the paved trail from Audubon Park up river for miles well past the airport and into St James Parish.

Most of the college towns have live music and good restaurants, especially Oxford. You could do the blues highway tour as well. The problem is hiking trails. See, people in MS don't like to hike unless the 4-wheeler is broke and they're dragging a deer or beer cooler out of the woods.

I think you'd probably have more to see and do on the coast. The weather should be nice in March.

If you're considering a 40th birthday trip to the 'Sip, you may need to do some serious inflection, but if determined, here are two options. Vicksburg, you can explore the military park and eat at Walnut Hills, Rocca and 10 South (a neat rooftop bar/resurant overlooking the river). Gulf coast, plenty of neat places in Ocean Springs and Bay St Louis and there's always NOLA, combine that with a Ship Island excursion (I think they start in mid March). Likely though, you'll find more of want you want in Asheville, NC.

The OP started almost identical threads in multiple other forums (Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Memphis, Chattanooga, etc.). Unless he is planning an EPIC road-trip covering the south-eastern US, he was just fishing for random information. He never responded to any of them.

Maybe he's trying make a decision based on the info he gets back!

If I were choosing between those states, I'd head to Memphis or somewhere in Florida.
