I don't like how on the coast they replaced the Oaks that didn't survive with palms...I felt they should've replaced them with oaks

I like the coast a lot too! It has a lot to offer, and the rebuilding that is still going on from Katrina helps retain jobs and encourage growth. It will be interesting to see how the coast rebuilds though, as I know some areas are remaining true to pre-Katrina where as some are going complete overhauls.
I'm sure Jackson does offer alot, I only drive through there on I-55 headed toward the coast, and the HWY always seems to be in a prepetual state of construction...which I guess is good...improving and growth.
I've often wondered where the wealthly live in Jackson, as in suburbs? Isn't Madison county like your rich county? Or Annandale area...is that where the rich live...or do wealthly people all own homes on Ross Barnett Resevoir? I remember reading a few years back about a huge master plan for Ross Barnett to bring in high end housing and shopping...did any of that ever come into being? Just curious, will have to spend some time in Jackson one day...it actually looks very nice from the freeway...although that big curve and hill on I-55 by that massive hospital can be pretty scary if your driving too fast !

There's no one area that the wealthy reside. You can find them in Jackson, Madison County, Rankin County, along the Reservoir, etc. You're probably referring to Harbor Walk, which many of us call Lost Harbor since nothing happened except for a reworked existing road and a crane sat on site for a couple of months. It did more damage than good, seeing as how it demolished "the Dock" which was a well established bar & lounge on the water that hosted many talented musicians over the years. Most of the development now is occurring in Downtown Jackson. There's over $1 billion of development of ongoing and recently finished projects, including the new Convention Center, the Pinnacle Building, Old Capitol Museum, King Edward Hotel Renovation, new Federal Courthouse building, Standard Life Renovation, and more. You get to see only a small portion of the city from the interstate - take the Pearl Street exit next time you're coming through. There's some great places to eat here too, I actually think the restaurants are one of Jackson's best kept secrets. I never run out of options.

My wife and I will probably rent until something comes on the market to our liking. We've toured with real estate agents but didn't see anything that caught our eye.

I've lived and worked in the Hattiesburg area for 15+ years now, during which time I have met some great people.

Pros to this area:

1.An easy drive to New Orleans, Mobile, Daulphin Island, Jackson, the MS. Gulf Coast, Birmingham, & even Pensacola.
2. The Pat Harrison Waterway Parks.
3. The Natchez Trace.
4. The Desoto National Forrest.
5. The Numerouse Small Rivers & Creeks.
6. The Revtilazation happening in Downtown Hattiesburg, Ellisville, & Laurel.
7. The Rails to Trails. a Walking & Bike Path.
8. The Many Beautiful BackRoads to be enjoyed via whatever method of travel you choose.
9. The Petal & Oakgrove School Systems, i'm sure there are more than these 2 across the state.
10. The cost of living.
11. The History Associated with this State.
12. The Blues of the Delta.
13. For the hunters an abundance of a variety of game.
14. The liberal Gun Laws.
15. The fact that Sheriffs Departments are not allowed to use Radar.
16. The many festivals held throughout the year.
17. The Casinos if you like these things.
18. The Variety of cuisine available from the Coast to Tennessee, especially that prepared at mom & pop type places scattered throughout the state.
19. Dirt Track racing for those who enjoy racing at it's purest.
20. Having camp shelby here along with our othe military installations.
21. The Medical services available to the poor & uninsured.

Cons:

1. In the Hattiesburg to the Coast area, roadblocks that are so frequent that you feel like you live in an area under marshal law along with traffic stops that happen so frequently as to appear to be for the soul purpose of raising revenues.
2. The way the "Good Ole Boys" that have been in power way to long hold Mississippi back.
3. The condition of many secondary roads & highways.
4. The whole darn state is posted.
5. The way many folks don't appreciate nature & choose to discard everything from deer carcasses, truckloads of tires, appliances, household trash, and much more in places that would otherwise be beautiful.
6. The fact that so many counties are still dry.
7. City Police & Sheriff Departments patroling & setting up road blocks inside State parks & Patharrison Waterwat parks.
8. The real crimes that go unsolved.
9. The way city ordinances are enforced in a selective manner as opposed to equaly across the board along with healthcode inspections of restaurants.
10. The lack of strong animal rights laws.
11. The Heat & Humidity & lack of real winters not to mention a real screwy rain cycle.
12. The way gamewardens hyde 50 yards downstream from many canoe launch points, watching folks load coolers of beer into the canoes and waiting till they just get started on the float to wade out and write them as many tickets as possible & of course confiscate all the beer.
13. The fact that in this state you can get less time for murder than many other non-violent crimes.
14. The prejudice folks both white & black who do nothing but hurt Mississippi's overall progress. They are at least the minority at this point in time!
15. The Vandalism of Rest Stops, Welcome Centers, & other facilities in rural areas.
16. The way some smaller communities still don't accept outsiders and will let you know.
17. The cost of car tags.
18. The limited Beer & Alcohol selections due to state control.
19. The lack of variety at most groceries and other retail locations.
20. Wally world putting lots of smaller businesses out of business.
21. Flea Markets & Farmers markets that are to small to be worth the drive over.
22. The Un-Availability of highspeed internet along with cell service in many portions of the state.

When it is all said and done if you want to live somewhere with a reasonable cost of living, and you enjoy the great outdoors along with wanting to meet some truly awesome folks then you need to move on down to the Great South that we call Mississippi. For all of the cons I have listed I still love this state and enjoy meeting the many different folks who reside here.
