Default Hattiesburg and hurricanes

How bad does Hattiesburg suffer when hurricanes strike? How did it weather Katrina? I saw an ad for a home that said "remodelled after Katrina" and it made me wonder.

Katrina caused damage all the way up to Jackson...I think that's when it finally was no longer a hurricane.

Looking at the past, it is not very common for hurricanes to cause substantial damage beyond the first 15-30 miles or so inland from the coast. Hattiesburg is about 70 miles from the coast. You have to understand that Hurricane Katrina was NOT a usual hurricane, hence the reason it got so much attention from the nation. I was in Starkville, MS at the time (which is 250 miles from the coast) and we even had winds of 80+ mph.

Most people i know here evacuate to hattiesburg for hurricanes. I ride them out here in biloxi. As long as you avoid the areas that surge or flood you should be O.K. A huricane in hattiesburg is just cause to throw a house party

Katrina was definitely not normal, our basement was in 2 feet of water and we live on a hill in Western Pennsylvania.
