It seems you must have only been reading one side of those discussions.
I lived in Los Angeles where there was lots of money - and lots of racism, and lots of poor health care, and lots of poor education in city schools. One woman I dated was student teaching as part of her scholarship contract - in return for her more or less free of charge degree from UCLA she would student teach at fairly low wages for two years - and the stories she would tell I am sure went far beyond the norms in our local schools.. It's not just a lack of money that leads to poor education - more often than not its lack of parenting, and Mississippi certainly doesn't have a corner on that market.
I like where I live. I've lived all over the country and recently had the opportunity to move pretty much anywhere I want, I'm still here. Traffic aint bad, weather aint bad, people aint bad... no place is perfect but Mississippi just has a bit mroe balance than many of those other places - the best may not always be the best but the worse usually aint the worse, either.
