I hear there are lots of tornados out that way. Are they right? Do you get a lot of tornadoes?

Yes, there are many tornados. I grew up in the Tupelo area. The storms move across the state to the NE so the Tupelo area gets pounded. However, the worst of the storms usually cross the Plantersville - Union - Nettleton area.

My grandparents talked for years about a tornado back in 1936 or 37 that killed 500 or more people in Tupelo (the official record is 278, but that's whites only). You can research it online because it was one of the deadliest tornados in history. My grandparents told graphic horror stories about the aftermath-- how entire families were found dead while still huddled together -- how babies were hanging from treetops -- how a mirror fell and cut off their neighbor's head. Awful. Most people in that area have storm shelters so be sure your residence has one or a neighbor close by.

The Tupelo Daily Journal is online at www.djournal.com so check it out. A few weeks ago they did a 70th anniversary edition on the tornado I mentioned above.

Good luck.

We have been fortunate in Hernando. Lived here since 1973 & only one has touched down. Hit a garage or shed.

However 1974 was when Southaven area was hit bad. Destroyed a trailer park at I-55 & Goodman Rd

The coastal areas dont get as many bad tornadoes, but then your obvious threat is Hurricanes. Otherwise, you are at the mercy of mother nature.

If you are on the east side of a hurricane you will see lots of tornados in addition to the hurricane.
