Any thoughts to towns we might find friendly to Yanks who are out-going? Not interested in living in a big city but proximity to one would be great. When I think of the south I think southern plantations, moss and friendly people. Any places I should steer clear of or make a definate point to check out? Thanks.

I live in Mississippi, smack-dab in the middle of it and I love living here. I've lived here since I was about 10 years old and I'm 34 now. It's a great place to raise children. Not all folks here are not what people think....bible-beating, yankee hater, always dirty, stupid people. I really hate that way of thinking from people in other states.
Most people I know here are very nice, and they would give you the shirt off their back if asked. As long as you treat them with respect, they'll do the same for you.
It's very peaceful here, especially in the country. You can leave your doors unlocked and still feel very safe.
I think you'd like Neshoba County, the county next to where I live. It's also about an hour and a half from Jackson, MS.
There's a casino here and a big waterpark, also the Choctaw Indian reservation.
At any rate, very nice folks here that aren't as descriminating as people think.
Schools are good here too, some may be small, but they are still good.
If you have any other ?'s don't hesitate to ask.

When considering the coastal areas (in any state) be sure to factor in the cost of your homeowner's insurance. The number of carriers writing it has really dwindled and you might be looking at steep premiums as well as a high deductible. So although you might save on taxes, you could give it right back in insurance premiums.

Great feedback all of you! My husband and I are in NE Florida now and are increasingly scared of all the hurricanes ~ I'm surprised to hear recommendations of the Gulf Coast, remember Katrina hit there and isn't it expensive now?
I am looking for a town that has a New Age feel to it, walkable, with an intown old fashioned neighborhoods that are walkable, some funky coffee shops, farmers market and health food stores ~ also yoga studios. Is Hattiesburg safe from the storms? Would be nice to be near a lake (no rivers due to the flooding) but we are not into sports, more of a community feeling with all ages ~ we are middle aged but wonder if there is a rehab hospital for jobs there; do not want a 'retirement' community per se. What is good about Meridian?
any feedback would be great!

As far as "New Age" I would say parts of Jackson (Fondern, Belhavan). There is also Vicksburg and Meridan but those towns seem really backwards IMO compared to the rest of the state. There is also Northeast Mississippi. Im not to familiar with that area, went to Tupelo once and loved it. Might wanna check that out also.
Your best bet would probaly be around downtown Gulfport or even Biloxi for that matter. I do know that Gulfport is revitalizing their downtown after Katrina.
Here is a link that talks about it. Major Projects Give Downtown Gulfport Extreme Makeover | Harrison County Development Commission
Best of luck on your move! Hope I helped.

Hattiesburg is usually safe from storms and the place people evacuate to--but Katrina was a different animal and the town was heavily damaged and lost power for weeks. Your New Age milieu is going to be hard to find in Mississippi--Oxford and the coast notwithstanding. But Hattiesburg does have a downtown area that is putting in more housing and has an artsy community, bookstore, weekly farmers markets, shops and dining spots, along with occasional festivals and art walks. There is a music scene downtown and the historic neighborhood is within walking distance. It is a work in progress and they are looking for folks to prime the pump!

The only town that comes to mind (and it may not fit *all* of your criteria) is Ocean Springs. Somebody mentioned the Fondren area of Jackson, and I guess that might work too. As for me, I would probably look at Fairhope, AL, although that is smack dab on Mobile Bay.
