OK but I live in a town of about 4000 and near us is another town of about 2000. It doesn't take many to make that 2% rise to ten percent or more. I suspect the hispanic populations are going to be more spread out in the agricultural areas since that is often what brings individual family members here in the first place.

Ummmmm. 2% of 1,000,000 & 2 % of ten is still two percent. The percentage would not change with a higher number .

Well.... if the overall population of a state is two percent it is still two percent if 90% of a certain population lives in ONE county or twenty. I have no idea what the overall population of Los Angeles is, for example but, given I lived in the Echo Park area, I am pretty sure my neighborhood was at least 80% hispanic. Does this imply Los Angeles overall is 80% hispanic?
Now, read chicagoland's post again.

Of course so much depends on what part of Mississippi you're talking about. Mississippi is like three different countries in one state....North Mississippi is very different from the Delta. And the coast is totally different as well.
*sigh. The good outweighs the bad. We are from Oxford, Mississippi but living in the DC area for the next three years. I can't wait to move back!

[quote]Lack of culture?
Liberal??? I'm about as conservative as they come. "Most savage tribes"...what does that even mean? I truly hope you don't mean what I think you mean.
There is a serious lack of cultural events in Mississippi unless you live in Oxford or Starkville. I'm talking about theatre, arts, music....what are you talking about?

Mississippi has plenty of culture. Do you mean "high culture?" Or do you mean cultural events?
There's lots of street fairs around the state. There's thalia mara hall and the (way too short) Mississippi Opera season. There aren't many concerts for sure, but there are some good blues clubs. These are all cultural events, they're just not as diverse as you might find in a place like NY or DC.
Which isnt to say the state lacks diversity. I really think it jsut lacks money and the population density to drive more cross cultural events. It's easy to throw an Arab fair or Greek fair or Polish fair or Vietnamese fair in Detroit where there's lots of people of Arab and Greek and Polish descent and lots more people to show up for the fun.
It would be kinda cool to see a street fair celebrating cinco de mayo or chinese new year. Problem is the place with the more diverse ethnic population (Starkville for example) is in an area with a lower overall population.
