Blueman why did you give up plumbing? My next door neighbor is a plumber and he is quite comfortable. I think you are in the wrong town. You have a valuable skill. Don't give up.

I even heard that plumbers have some of the most recession-proof jobs due to the need of their services.

Ok I changed to my screen name again? Yes any recommendations that you may have for me would be GREATLY APPRECIATED...We are litterally being sucked dry, Shipyard won't even hire me because I don't weld and I'm to old for any training programs. So I'm kinda stuck for now and really don't know what to do.!

After reading your question I couldn't resist answering. Foremost though, YOU have to decide what's best for YOU. Take other's opinions as advice NOT gospel. I spent two years there and am glad to be back in PA. For starters, the weather, that's true, there is no such thing as dry heat. You have humidity pretty much year round. May through October is furnace. Winter time might get down to the high 40's, which I consider mild. You might have a minor frost 5 times a year. Personally, I like the cool falls up north & don't mind snow, but again to each his own. I don't know where you stand politically, but MS is ultra conservative. I was in the minority being Catholic, unless you are on the Gulf Coast which is predominantly Catholic. People try to incorporate God into everything. Not all, but many, look down upon those that aren't a southern baptist or some form of protestant. Religion to me is no big deal, I don't care what others are or aren't, and I'm not a religious person, but MS has plenty of Bible-beaters, (those who throw their religion in your face). On the economy it's true that it has not been hit as hard as other areas like Detroit, California, and Florida. Remember though, there are business struggling EVERYWHERE. Statistically, MS is the poorest state per capita in the country. I have seen this first hand in the rural areas. With the exception of the Jackson area, and Madison and Rankin Counties, education is not very good as a whole. As for jobs, good luck being an outsider. Mississippi is very hospitable to tourists. Move there and try getting a job or establish a business and it's a whole other story. I met someone from Alabama while down there and she complained how cliquey MS can be. I'm not sure what it is, but you are looked down upon if your not from there, especially if you're from the north! There are some who still fight the civil war. I've run into other "Yankees" who share the same opinion as me. I had my own business, and unfortunately it didn't work out. One day I asked a friend of mine why others in the same trade as me had work, but I didn't and his answer was because I wasn't from there. He politely told me that once folks find out you are not from the area they won't do business with you. This was coming from a business man himself. A "good ole boy" network is still very strong. Although I met some fine people there, I can honestly say I don't miss it.

THANK YOU FOR CONFIRMING WHAT I THOUGHT!!! An outsider here doesn't stand a chance in hell and will drain you dry. We are hoping to get enough money from tax time to relocate. I thought these folks down here were descent people but I have never seen a more corrupt town in my LIFE!!! CROOKED and I do mean CROOKED! Wal Mart is about the ONLY place that isn't! I need to vent. Ah never mind! All I know is that I>>> Screwed up and should've would've could've bla bla bla and listened to my gut instinct and stayed put!! So any who I would love to get on here and BASH the tar outta this place but wouldn't do any good. So by for now.

I was an outsider and do fine...I moved to Gulfport, met some nice people, neighbors helped...the one across from me knew I was scared of bugs & had a hard time coming home after work & knew about what time I got off, he'd come outside and kill mosquito hawks so i could get in my house lol...also when I moved out the complex he saw me & my 3 female friends moving my stuff, he came in and help with the big stuff (w/d, dressers etc)...the only time I felt like an outsider is when people looked at me like I was crazy because #1 I moved there voluntarily, #2 I like brick homes.

If you are planning on moving to Mississippi, Desoto County in the North West section is where you should look. It is the fastest growing county, as others have stated and has award winning schools. If you have children this is where you want them. The major cities within Desoto County (East to West) Olive Branch, Southaven, Horn Lake, and Walls. Other cities west in the county are Nesbit and Lake Cormorant. There are plenty of jobs in Memphis Tennessee, as well as Desoto County. Tunica (where the casinos are) is about 30 minutes away. From any direction in Desoto County you can cross the stateline into Memphis in about 5 to 10 minutes. Desoto County has a mall, a lot of shops, and all the restaurants one could want. Each city has its own rec. sports for the kids, as well as parks, Riverkings ice hockey, whatever you want, you can find it here. If you can't, you can find it in Memphis. The only down fall that I see is that we are located by one of the most dangerous cities in the country. Check out the crime stats for Memphis. Desoto County's crime is very low, but I am afraid that over time, we will see it start to trickle down here. Just remember if you are okay living that close to the second dangerous city in the country, then this is the place for you.

My company transfered me here last year - Gulfport, MS. - the coast is still rebuilding from Katrina - if you wanting to move to the south - looking at Pensacola, FL.
