My family has to drive across Mississippi on a trip to New Orleans. We are of Greek ancestry, and have dark hair and olive skin. Also we are Catholic. My question is will we be safe in Mississippi if we have to stop for fuel or a meal or to stay overnight? There are many movies and articles about abuse of non White Anglo Saxon Protestants (W.A.S.P.) in Mississippi, and I want my family to be safe. What steps do you advise that we take to avoid abuse? I mean if we have to stop for fuel and food at the state line and try to make it all the way across the state without stopping we can try it, I guess. Please advise. Thank you.

I have to say MS is not that bad. I'm half Italian so im dark, I have olive skin and I had no trouble especially in the rural parts. People were nice to my face and very humble/friendly.

I honestly don't think you'll have any trouble. I stayed there for 3 weeks with in laws.

Jeeezus, this is 2009, NOT 1959. I wouldn't be too concerned about being targeted because of your religion or skin color.

When passing through MS. Cleo I hope you do stop for gas and food.
You will find the people very friendly. You might want to stay awhile.
MS. people are very curious and love to talk to people visiting their state.
Trust me, if you stop, you will be glad you did.

It would be interesting to know what state or region you live in.

Half the white people left in the Delta are Italian and Catholic. Are you for real?

Default What?

This is Mississippi in July. Everyone who isn't allergic to the sun has dark skin! People won't even give you a second glance, but don't be surprised if they think you're Mexican and speak Spanish to you - there are lots of hispanic people along the coast.

I am married to a beautiful Catholic woman from Belize, Central America. She is part Hispanic, East Indian (India), and West Indian (West Indies). We live in Mississippi and with the rare exception of encountering an ignorant, narrow minded person (they are in every state) we have no trouble. If you encounter one of those people you may get a rude remark, but that's about it.

For the most part, people have been very friendly and welcoming.

I hope you enjoy your drive through Mississippi.

OMG. do not even go near MS or any other southern state. You will be lynched! At least half the population are klan members and hate Catholics. If you have to drive through the state of MS then stop only for fule. No sleep over. This is a warning.
good luck troll.

I can see Lake Erie from where I live in Ohio.

Thanks for your comments. Mississippi must not be as dangerous as it is portrayed to be.
