Default Coast - Barrier Islands

We're new to the area and have heard alot about the barrier islands - how actually owns them?

I've only been here a little while. I know that some of them are part of the National Islands Seashore Park (so the national park service). I've heard Cat Island is privately owned. Some of the others are little more than sand bars with a few trees. You can take a ferry boat sponsored by the park service to get to Ship Island. It is a nice day trip and the beaches on the far side of the island are as nice as FL or AL gulf beaches.
