Default Wild Turkey?

I was driving down the Natchez Trace, from Port Gibson to Natchez and I saw what I think was a turkey. Had sort of bluish skin on the head and a pinkish wattle.
It was scooting along in the underbrush between the greenbelt and the trees.

Was that a wild turkey?

I saw lots of deer, and a big old owl too. that is a very pretty drive.

I'm not from Mississippi, so sorry if it's an obvious question.

by scooting, I mean he (or she, I can't tell the difference) was moving along in the underbrush at the base of the tree line. Moving fast, the way birds run on the ground.

Turkeys spend most of their time on the ground. The only time that they fly is in the evenings when they roost in trees, mornings when they fly down from the roost, and when they feel they are in danger from a potential predator. Turkeys are very elusive creatures - their eye sight is believed to be 8 times greater than humans.

They can be found near the coast, but they prefer to roost in pine trees. The turkeys we have here are Eastern wild turkeys. There are several different types around the nation.

They are elusive creatures, but they are nowhere near as elusive as the infamous snipes.

Snipes are a peculiarly southern bird that can only be hunted at night in very rural areas. They are nocturnal and very shy of light sources. They can be attracted by the sound of a snipe whistle.
