There are lots of older neighborhoods in the University area that are pretty safe. And there are smaller communities nearby, with nice houses for not too much. Since it is a university town, there are also a lot of apartments that are not 'ghetto'. You'll love Hattiesburg. Very progressive and sort of kinky.

If you have upwards of 400k for a house, try Canebrake. It's gated and guarded and pretty posh.

You will find scads of apartments--many new--around campus and within a 10 to 20 minute drive to town. Hattiesburg has sprawl so if you are working in the western part of the town, there are apts. out that way as well. The area around campus--Hardy to Hwy 49 and back to Lincoln Road often has small homes for sale or rent. There is a nice set of townhomes/duplexes called Woodshire that is near to everything in town. Southgate Realty LLC

If you prefer rural or gated communities the Oak Grove area has that. Hattiesburg proper has gated communities also--Timberton and Baywood Cove are two. Further out, Shadow Ridge Golf Community has some smaller garden homes also.

Petal offers small town life within an easy commute.

Hattiesburg is safe particularly if you stay west of Hwy 49. There are loads of options so it is almost impossible to direct you to specific sites. If you are house hunting you will again find all kinds of options.

Downown has apartments also and it is an artsy atmosphere. An exception to the west of 49 caveat.

Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association

Good luck and welcome!!
