Default Picnic to give Atlanta some Mississippi flavor

Picnic to give Atlanta some Miss. flavor

Mississippians are invited to attend the first-ever Mississippi in the Park Picnic and Reunion, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 8 in Atlanta.

The event, similar to events held in New York City and Washington, D.C., unites Mississippians who live in the Atlanta area for a celebration of their native state’s food, music and culture.

It will be held at Chastain Park’s Four Grill Pavilion.

Mississippi universities, spearheaded by the University of Mississippi, are registering current residents of the state who would like to attend as well.

The cost, including registration and a catfish dinner, is $20 per person. It’s $35 with a commemorative T-shirt included.

For details, contact Jim Donald at jdonal2@comcast.net, or sign up online at www.olemissalumni.com/legacy/event.aspx.

The alumni associations of other universities, including Delta State University in Cleveland, may also be contacted for details.

Is this event open to everyone. I am an alumni of Jackson State University and I will also be in Atlanta that weekend. This sounds like an interesting event that I would like to attend. The only thing is ....... I don't eat fish!lol! Is there anything else available on the menu?

Thanks

This sounds very interesting. I've heard about the one that is in New York every summer. I believe that one is held in Central Park. I have a lot of former classmates and friends who have moved to the Atlanta area. It would be good to see some of them. It would also be nice for those who want to attend to get toghether and charter a bus.

I'm a native born Mississippian, but I'm unclear about this event and its purpose.

"....native state’s food, music and culture..."

Is it different from that of Georgia? I've lived in Atlanta for decades and in Mississippi for decades (grew up there) - and I didn't notice a difference when I moved (insofar as culture, food, etc).

But it sounds interesting as a way for those who have moved out of Mississippi to get together socially. People seem to always retain some sense of identifying with their home state.
