I believe there is a Patel's grocery on Highway 80 near JSU. They have another store on Old Canton Road but it is waaaay north of JSU (it's in Ridgeland).

No idea. There are some nice grocery stores that carry specialty foods at the requests of local shoppers. The closest is probably McDade's on Fortification, about 10 minutes from JSU. Otherwise, the Fresh Market in Ridgeland and Kroger at the Madison exit are extremely nice and carry big varieties of unique products. Those are probably 20 minutes from JSU. Maybe you could a local Indian restaurant and ask.

That's not a bad idea. You could call Ruchi India and ask them.

Don't know, but speaking for myself, I LOVE Indian food!

I don't know much about it, so when I go to an Indian restaurant I ask the waiter to order for me. I just tell him I like meat and vegetables and bread. Never been disappointed!

If you're a Vegetarian and are going to be cooking from scratch, try Rainbow Whole Foods Co-op in Fondren. They'll have all the basics, and most of the fancy things you're looking for - all organic, and all from hygenic/trustworthy sources. It's non-profit, with a Board of Directors which includes some of Jackson's most prominent people.

You'll find fresh Ginger, fresh Turmeric, fresh Lemongrass, and fresh Cilantro in the produce section (and, in season, its' even locally-grown!!! - Yes! Turmeric grown in Mississippi!). A huge selection of grains & legumes of top quality and top freshness, you'll find in the bulk bins. And their bulk spices have a fast turnover, and so are really fresh (as well as amazingly cheap).

Rainbow has a great selection of oils (some in bulk, like their award-winning olive oil), and the cheeses and yogurts and butters (both Goat and Cow) in the refrigerator cases are the best in town.

When we lived in the Jackson area, I'd spot the top chefs in town, stocking-up on spices (and experimenting with new ones, no doubt). And I'd see them in the produce section, too. Rainbow has a very diverse and interesting group working the store, and it's one of the high-points of the Fondren Experience. There seems to be some sort of connection to Jackson State, since I've seen produce at Rainbow which was grown in JSU's Organic Garden. Oh, and most of the usual Indian essential oils and holistic remedies can be found in/around Rainbow's supplements section.

But if you're needing fresh dates or mango for a chutney, or maybe some Elephant Garlic, and it's 11pm, or 1am, it's amazing what you'll find at any Kroger in the area (I think the one on Frontage Road is closest to Jackson State).

Mississippi has a huge dichotomy between those who Can and Do, and those who Can't and Don't, the Can and Do set is as remarkably open-minded and open to experimentation with foods as the Can't and Don't set is notoriously, pathologically closed-minded and stuck in a time warp. There are enough Can and Do types in the area, though, to keep a decent selection of exotic edibles in stock in most places.

I love Patel's and it is very close to JSU, almost within walking distance. They have undergone several expansions in the last few years and now have an extensive fresh produce and frozen foods sections and a selection of pastries. The store is always very clean and the staff are friendly. They also have video rentals and jewelry.
