Recently Single Mom looking to move to Biloxi...opinions
I am a recently divorced mom of 2 kids ages 4 & 15 mos. I currently reside in rural New Mexico and I am looking for a change in scenery. I have a couple of friends that live in Biloxi and I will be visiting there next week. I have done a lot of research on line about the area and it seems like a good place to live. Can I get some opinions about Biloxi? I appreciate anything anyone has to say!

Wonderful quality of life. The Coast is more than just Biloxi. The western side of the Coast is quieter, with historic communities such as Pass Christian and Bay St. Louis, still coming back from Katrina, and Diamondhead which is basically a suburban golf community with a marina. Long Beach is a quiet community; most of the lots running along the beach highway are just grass at this point after Katrina. Gulfport, especially north of I-10, is a suburban area with typical shopping centers and subdivisions. Tradition is a huge new community under development north of I-10 that is intended to eventually be its own town. Woolmarket is an area north of I-10 which is changing slowly from a rural area to a nice suburban area. Biloxi has some nice suburban and historic neighborhoods north of the beach highway and numerous casinos near the downtown area. Ocean Springs is perhaps the most picturesque community. And there are many rural areas north of I-10 and small towns to the north such as Lucedale. The coastal barrier islands are gorgeous. There are many rivers for caneoing and the Mississippi sound for boating. New Orleans is an hour away and Florida two hours away. Traffice and crime are relatively low. The population is extremely diverse, due to a mixture of military bases, NASA, casinos, and other industries. The economy is okay but not great. There are more beautiful beaches and ocean water in Florida. Parts of it appear in need of landscaping, sign ordinances, etc. The weather overall is great. As a place to live, most people love it there.

*sigh* I miss Biloxi. I'd say if you're looking for more of a family-friendly type of town/community, Ocean Spring is great. Most people retire there. It's close to New Orleans, Panama City and Mobile, Alabama. Gulfport and Biloxi are where things are happening (with restaurants, bars, etc) especially the latter with casinos being reconstructed. They were still under construction when I left so I'm pretty sure more has been added since I've been gone. Hwy 90 (in Biloxi) have started to get business set up (new restaurants, along with casinos being built).
Hurricane season --If you move, I recommend preparing contingency plans during the hurricane season (flood or home insurance, property insurance) JUST IN CASE. We've had Gustave and Ike scare so for peace of mind, do keep a plan in mind. The streets can get flooded during the said season (Hwy 90 especially since it's closer to the coastal beach). It hasn't been that bad when I was there.

Interestng - we live here ( coastal Mississippi ) and we may be getting transfered to Hobbs, MN. - as for Biloxi you'll be in the Casino - Military enviorment - rental housing can run anywhere from $400-$500 to several thousand per month. The job market is sad - low pay - the area is still recovering from Katrina.

I am from Mississippi but reside in Florida now. My hubby and I have a few homes for sale in Biloxi that we picked up after Katrina > We gutted and repaired homes to try and get the economy kick-started after such devastation to such a beautiful area. Things are still moving slowly in terms of trying to rent/sell. This may be to your advantage if you are looking to rent or buy. This summer we visitied and stayed a few days to work on our properties. My teens loved it. Beautiful river close by our house where we jet skiied. Loved the restaraunts, beachfront is improving, Ship island excursion is fun. .

She probably wants Biloxi because she is a recent single mom, meaning she'll be on her own with 2 kids...and the only people she knows (her support group) are in Biloxi...I like west Biloxi better than East Biloxi, more spacious, newer homes, better schools, nicer area over all.
