I gave The Cal Group, a local housing company, $500 deposit to buy one of their homes. Unfortunately, I did not qualify for the loan. But after several phone calls and emails, they have not responded to return my money. I live in California and would like to know if anyone has information on this company and where I might contact to have my money returned. Their web site is www.calrealty.net, the person that gave me a tour was Marques Thomas.

Did you read your paperwork? Was the $500 an application fee or something like that?
Did you pay by check or credit card?
If by credit card you might try appealing to the bank that issued the card.

Thanks for your fast response. I read the paperwork carefully. It was definitely a deposit. I paid by credit card, but that was in June. I suppose I could still try talking to my credit card company, but it seems a little late.

When I moved to Biloxi, they seemed very shady. I talked to them about renting a one bedroom and they told me none were available. Then they wanted to show me a bunch of two bedrooms in Gulfport when I specifically said I wanted to look in Biloxi. They were very high pressure and pushy. i was supposed to follow the realtor to look at a couple of properties that were close by but we ended up driving for miles and miles in the opposite direction of where I wanted to live. Eventually, I just turned around and lost them. They were constantly pushy and just seemed shady. I got a bad feeling about them almost immediately. Good luck with getting your money back.

I'm almost certain a credit card will side with you in the case of fraud. You never received any tangible goods or services.
I had a merchant account and received more payments than I was authorized to one month.
The bank froze the excess for 6 months to protect themselves in case of chargebacks.
Try it you have nothing to lose...but that $500.
Also you should complain to the Attorney General's office in MS. to register your complaint.
Sometimes they will return your money just to make you go away.

Thanks for the information horseyjen. I guess i should have gone to this forum before giving them any of my money. And yes, NWS, I do plan to email the Attorney General's office, if for no other reason so that there can be a formal record of complaint against them.
