And why? Scenery? Schools? Shopping? Jobs?
My husband and I are looking to move somewhere warmer and need more info to help us decide. Mississippi is just one place we are looking into. What is your HONEST opinion of your surroundings?

Thank you in advance for your help!

OH wow, that is truly a very hard question to answer....I love many different parts of my state.

I have lived in the North-eastern part of the state on and off my whole life. We live in what is known as the Piney Ridge area with rolling hills and abundant tree cover. Tupelo is just a few minute drive from me and has anything I could possibly want as far as shopping goes. Tupelo also has the largest private run hospital in the country and it is rated very well.

Tupelo is adding more things to do for entertainment. There is the usual theaters for movies, parks, Plays, Orchestras, the Bancorp South building for many different things from Disney on Ice to Broadway Musicals to major bands to ice hockey and arena football.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast captured my heart before Katrina hit. It has changed of course and all the older homes, well most of them are all gone now....the charm of yesteryear is not as prominant but I still like to go visit for a break now and then....

I guess I am partial to the Northern part because I kept moving back here and when I wasn't here I was thinking of home.

I chose to come back to raise my boys in an environment I felt was the best of anywhere.

Yet, I am so sure many people will have similar feelings about their own part of MS. The MS Delta along the MS River has her own charm as well as drawbacks. Natchez, lays claim to many old Southern homes has a charm all of her own, Jackson, our state Capitol can cite city living more so than any other city but with that comes the drawbacks of city living with crime and higher prices.....Southaven is located in the Northwestern corner of the state and has been growing for the past few years, considered a suburb of Memphis many love the laid back lifestyle it offers with the proximity to Memphis....

Hard question...I like all of MS. However, I'm a beach and palm tree kinda guy...so the Coast wins hands down for me. Great weather, people, food, entertainment, golfing, gambling, deep sea fishing, history...the coast has pretty much everything....and if it doesn't, New Orleans is only an hour away. If I could not live there in MS, Natchez would be my second choice...simply because of its old southern charm and houses....my favorite house style is the Antebellum with huge columns...and there are tons of them in Natchez! I also like Hattiesburg, Vicksburg, and Jackson. Also consider DeSoto County, the first county as you enter MS from the north on I-55, it is really just a big suburb of Memphis...but has everything...gaming in Tunica and Beal Street in Memphis are just minutes away...great area!
MS really has everything going for it in my opinion...so give it strong, fair consideration! Good Luck!

Thank you 2HHI. We did stop thru Biloxi and Gulfport several years ago and really liked the area. It was very upsetting, even to me, when the hurricane came and ripped the area apart! I would love to go back and see how things are coming along. I am a warm weather person myself and would like to live near the gulf however, DH likes the seasons to change a little more. He too doesn't like winter however. This is why I am looking at the whole state (along with others). Even if I had to drive for a couple of hours to get to the beach it would be ok with me. Of course, I would like to live closer than that but may have to compromise. Compromise means that we are also looking at places like New Mexico! There would be lakeside beaches somewhere but it just wouldn't be the same!

Hattiesburg might be a great choice for you, it is only a couple hours from the coast and is an up and coming town. I am not that familiar with Hattiesburg, but I am sure there is much info out there. Try out this official site:

Hattiesburg, MS

it seems as if Extreme Home Makeover will also be visiting there December 3 thru the 11th to choose a family for a Makeover. Very interesting.....

Might be able to also catch the show and see a tad bit of the town.

As of when I checked out the website, the temp was a mild 62 degrees at 6:50 P.M. this Sunday evening...

Scroll down the website to the left half close to the bottom, there is a video tour of many things such as medical, lifestyle, quality of life, tourism,

Scenery/Housing- Madison, Jackson, Delta area, Gulf Coast
Schools- Madison, Jackson.

The good thing about Mississippi is that no matter where you are, you're never more than 2 hours from a major city (hospitals, airports, shopping, jobs, etc). You just have to choose what weather you like best (north MS and south MS are two completely different climates), what type of lifestyle you want to live (urban, suburban, rural), and if the coastal areas are worth the risk of potentially damaging hurricanes (there will be hurricanes). You can find nice scenery and schools in almost every part of the state, just do your research on the schools as you would any other state. Your occupation types will determine where the jobs can be found, but most of them are centered around the larger cities (Jackson, Gulfport/Biloxi, Tupelo, Hattiesburg, etc).

I would add Desoto county to the list for great schools. It's also close to Memphis (which may be good or bad, depending on how you look at it) which has shopping and all the big city amenities.

My favorite part of the state is on I 55 when you can see the sign that says "Welcome to Tennessee"....Just joking...I really like the Biloxi/Gulfport area alot. It has pretty much everything to offer but still has alot of small town charm. Oxford is a beautiful area too.
