Default Moving to Greenville...HELP!

My fiancee is moving to Greenville, MS on VERY SHORT NOTICE!! His job starts in less than 2 weeks, and from reading previous posts on here, this city is not looking good. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me about (for lack of a better word) "uppity" neighborhoods/apartment complexes/gated communities in this city. His salary will be sufficient enough to afford up to $1000.00 a month rent, and he is nervous about finding a nice place on such short notice.

Also, any info on nice, clean, and safe motels in the area would be helpful. We are going this weekend to look at housing, and need a place to stay while visiting. Any help would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!!

For starters, good luck. I don't live there anymore and only visit once every couple of years but most of the "uppity" neighborhoods don't usually have apartments and definitely no gated communities. For $1000 a month he can afford most any place in the Greenville area without any problem, apartment or house. Unless it has changed the best area that I can remember with apartments is on Cypress Lane. There used to be a really upscale apartment complex but its been awhile. Also, look for something outside the city limits south of town.
As far as motels go you're going to have the same issues as finding a home. But there is a really nice Fairfield Inn downtown next to the levee. It caters to the casino visitors. The area (where the motel is) stinks but the motel is nice.

Once again, good luck.

You want to stay south of the Mall on Highway 1 for housing, or look in Leland or Stoneville. Those towns are about 10-15 miles to the east of Greenville. As far as hotels, there is a really nice Holiday Inn Express on 82 just as you come into town from the East; it's very clean, reasonably priced, and you'll be able to do brain surgery the next day..

There is also the Greenville Inn which is in the old Levee Board building right down on the levee just before you get to the casinos. It's nice, but once you get out of the downtown area its kind of bleh.

There are actually quite a few good places to eat around Washington County: Doe's Eat Place is downtown, has some of the best steaks in America (they just did a feature on them in the NY Times); there is a place called The Bourbon Mall - it's out in the country a ways, but worth the drive, they have a great menu, great steaks, two bars, and a dance floor that is hopping on the weekends; and a new restaurant off of 82 called Posecai's - the chef there trained at Brigten's in New Orleans and the food is EXCELLENT.

I haven't been on here lately so your probly allready here. I'v been here all my life, own a small business & live on the north side of Greenville. Every thing here is moving south, new businesses, new housing. Cypress Lane has some nice Apts. with gate entrances. They are close to the mall and walmart. Country Club Estates on hwy 1 S. is a great neighberhood, as well as a few others. Worst part about Greenville is people's negative personality, like it kills them to say "Thank You" or May I help you. Crime and drugs is pretty bad but I think thats allmost every where you go. Hope I was helpful & good luck
