how many people did it poll?
was it a fair polling across the board?
did it poll transplants or lifers?
what questions did they ask in the poll to determine one's "happiness"?

Not to mention the article was written prior to hurricane Katrina and Louisiana was #1?...lol..some states I consider "happy" aren't even on the list. ok who wrote that article?????

and you are correct, we're all "happy" in various ways for various reasons. And that's beautiful that you're happy, evident by your unhappiness to where you once were and that's awesome. but as a lifelong resident of Mississippi I think that article was written by some jaded transplant at best who generalized the "happy" factor and painted with a broad happy brush at the same time.
I asked the same questions, check out this thread, it should shed some light on some of your questions.
FLORIDA, some of the happiest people in America!!

Maybe real happiness has nothing to do with wealth. Maybe the people of Mississippi are accustomed to, and are happy with the amount of money and possessions they have, and look for the simple pleasures in life such as outdoor activities, family, or other things for happiness.

We have beautiful scenery here... rolling hills, lakes, rivers, coastal areas, and more. Maybe the things other people call progress such as huge cities with nonstop traffic and 50 story skyscrapers, where you can find whatever you want in a 2 block area aren't what makes us happy. Maybe a person who lives in a place like that is happy because it's what they are accustomed to.

Maybe the "Quality of Life" points you put so much stock in aren't really the measure of happiness. Just because you think you wouldn't be happy here doesn't mean we aren't.

You may be thinking of it from a different perspective. Try putting yourself in our shoes for a while. You can find happiness wherever you are if you try.

Very true jhadorn, money does not equal happiness, happiness is acceptance, happiness is love, joy, family, tradition, friends and good neighbors. Darn it now I want can't wait to go there now!

Desert kid, when you visit I hope you enjoy it. It's probably not going to be what you are used to, as Mississippi is rural and has more of a southern/country vibe. Just come with an open mind and try to have fun. If you come with a preset notion as to what it will be or should be you probably won't enjoy it, but if you come looking for a new experience and to see new places I think you will like it.

Good sir, I love rural/country/southern vibes more than anything else when it comes to location. In my young life I have seen what sprawl and time has done to my once small town, and I miss that little country podunk vibe my town had.

The only problem I think I will ever have with Mississippi, is getting there, because my upcoming journey is (at the moment) filled with uncertainties and possible failures (in the trip, like price and travel method). Other than that, it may be my ideal place in the world and I really do hope I enjoy it too.

How prophetic, the whole trip has been canned (for now), might not be going for a very long time, it just sickens me that I came so far for nothing.

I may have spoken too soon on the trip, *fingers crossed* it is pretty hard to have everything and everyone aligned against me in these times regarding this trip.

Years of deprivation can lead a person to have a false sense of happiness so I can't really argue with you there.

For retirees, finding the simple things amazing in Mississippi is great, I agree. but Mississippi, although tries to copy, is not Florida. It has a huge population of people 25 and younger who want to know what a paved road looks like, who want to enjoy something finer than the same old nothing that's going on in Mississippi to this very day. there's no industry to speak of other than the service industry(McDonald's etc..). the Casinos aren't enough to stimulate the economy on it's on. it's depravity at it's best. but I digress. Happiness is indeed in the heart of the beholder. Some are happy with nothing while others are happy with something.

Oh well you'll fit right in.

Try Tunica or Tupelo first then work your way down. I'm sure you'll find the "podunk" town you're looking for in Mississippi.
