Post Would any of these cities fit me? (Or should I keep looking?)

Mississippi is on my list of possible places to move to. I've looked at 3 cities, Hattiesburg, Poplarville, and Terry. I really don't like living in big cities, and I'm very wary of the coast (because of hurricanes).

Anyway, would any of these cities fit what I'm looking for?

I'm 18, I'm not very social, and I don't particularly care for nightlife. However, I do want to live in at least a nice rental home or apartment (or if I decide to go to college, I'll probably live in a dorm).

Also, while looking at cities, are there some I should just stay away from in Mississippi?

Thanks for any answers!

Poplarville is wonderful (or was...I haven't been since Katrina resettled so many people). But I'm not sure I'd recommend if for someone young and single. Hattiesburg, on the other hand, has it all. Very open-minded and sophisticated, in a way no other Mississippi city is, since Greenville went under. And there's a really good university there. Go! The students at that school are not herd animals, like at most Southern colleges. And it's just a really sweet environment. You can party your tuchis off, or not, everybody is respected... Individualism is really pronounced in that part of the state. Hattiesburg has great student apartments. But be sure yours is in a safe area.

You might also consider Tupelo, which is big enough to offer a young person an array of opportunities. Very upbeat, with neat people. And nearby New Albany is wonderful. But again, it's small, and so quiet I'm not sure what a single person would do with his time.

AVOID:
.Entire Gulf Coast (except for Ocean Springs and Pass Christian). google the book, "Mississippi Mud"
.Virtually all old cities along the Mississippi River (very high crime rates)
.Jackson (very high crime rate)
.Canton (crime)
.Greenville (crime)

But don't even think about not going to college!!!!
Best of luck!

If you plan on attending college, I would look at Raymond (Hinds Community College), Goodman (Holmes Junior College), Clinton (Mississippi College), Starkville (Mississippi State University), Hattiesburg (University of Southern Mississippi), Ridgeland (branch of Holmes Junior College) or Oxford (University of Mississippi).

I know you said you don't like big cities, but Jackson has a great selection of colleges to choose from as well - Millsaps, Belhaven, Univ. of Mississippi Medical Center, and Jackson State University. Also, Holmes JC, Hinds CC and MC are all less than 20 minutes from Jackson (MC Law School is actually in Jackson).

I would consider living in a large city, but as long as I'm on the safe side.

Also, I looked up that book "Mississippi Mud", yea, I think I might stay away from the coast even more now.

Also, what about Picayune? I just discovered that city looking around the website.

I hope you don't gather your impression of the coast from a single book that tells a singe story. I know a lot of people that live on the coast and they love it there - of course, Hurricane Katrina was devastating and will always affect the coast to a certain degree, but many have rebuilt and are back to normal while some new businesses are popping up there as well. However, I don't think it's a great location for someone wanting to go to college soon.

Ok, I know I shouldn't judge based on a book.

However, I still don't feel real good about living on the coase because I really don't feel like dealing with hurricanes, well, at least not as much.

You don't like cities but you want to go to college, possibly.... There are many nice, quiet, small towns in Mississippi with colleges. Senatobia, Poplarville, Booneville, McComb, Starkville, and Perkinston fit these criteria. You would probably have the most opportunities in Starkville; it's much larger than the others and has a 4-year university. There are thousands of apartments there. Hattiesburg is also very nice but is fairly large. Brandon is also a very nice town, although a suburb of Jackson, with lots of apartments and proximity to many colleges.

No, seriously. finish your regular college then apply to be an associate professor or something. Professors get paid well in Mississippi from what I'm told and since you don't wanna be near the coast then any of the college towns around the state will suit you just fine. most of them are safe. it just depends on the school you want to attend. all of them are great. that's one of the few bright spots about Mississippi. Education.
