Most Scientists believe a major meter impact took place here millions of years ago. A lot of geologists go there to play in the dirt. It is classic example of a small rural MS town.

I was born in Kilmichael, Mississippi, USA. The town was originally named Leesville but was changed because there was another town nearby named Louisville. The names were too similiar.
In a town meeting around 1845 a man named Duncan McKinley proposed the town be renamed Kilmichael, which was the name of a city in his native land of Ireland and one not likely to be duplicated in Mississippi. My parents were also born in Kilmichael. There are many Irish, Scots-Irish, and English in that part of Mississippi. I am a decendent of the Sloans from Cork, Ireland; the Taylors from Antrim Co.; and the Edwards' from Scotland or Ireland. |

This is a pretty old post so I don't know if you have received an answer to your question. Kilmichael, Mississippi started out as a railroad town and had several different names. In the 1800's when people were trying to rename it a travelling Irishman came through and said that he had a name that wouldn't be found this side of the Mississippi. That name was Kilmichael, and evidently the people liked it so it became the name of my hometown-Kilmichael, Mississippi. I don't know if there is any relationship between the two towns although a lot of the residents in the area are of Irish descent. I hope to visit Kilmichael, Ireland in the future!! My Kilmichael is a small town with decent people and it is quiet, not much to do. People just live quietly among themselves. But it is home.
