I am moving to Hattiesburg this fall for grad school and I based my decision based upon the school and I didn't take into account the environment. Not very smart but now I am trying to make up for it.

As in the title, I am an asian female and I wondered what the place is like? I attended the University of Florida and currently live in Baltimore, MD so I know college towns and I know big cities. But both places have had high percentages of asians (that is, in terms of being a minority).

I have run into trouble b/c of race but I expect that to be just typical of anywhere and not city/town specific, but I just wondered how others view it there. Students of USM? Long term residents? I looked at the demographics and it was like less than 1% of the pop was asian. Is there an "asian town" anywhere nearby? asian markets?

I am not trying to insult Hattiesburg or imply anything, I would just like to find out more about the place I will be moving to.

There are Asian students on campus. There are Asian businesses in town. Many Vietnamese are on the coast. Asians are not an unusual sight. The foreign student office at USM could help you get in touch with the various student organizations like the Korean Student Assoc. or Chinese or whichever you prefer. I think there is an Asian market
