If you are on HWY 49 near Hattiesburg do stop at the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby. It is really done well and very interesting. It is not a little podunk operation. I have been to the Smithsonian and it is on that scale.
Also the Rails to Trails bike path from USM to about 40 miles down the way....

If you are looking for family stuff, you can take the kids to Lynn Meadows in Gulfport. They were doing free Friday nights--not sure if they still are.
The Island Strikes bowling alley on Pass Road is very nice and no smoking in the bowling area.
