I'm thinking of stopping for a day or so in Biloxi to visit some Gulf Coast beaches as part of a LONG trip from New York State to Colorado and back. I've read glowing descriptions of such beaches but am worried the ones in and around Biloxi are not back to normal after Katrina. What is the current state of the beaches around Biloxi?

More generally, does anyone have any advice about where to go to see the best Gulf Coast beach?

Thanks!

For "best Gulf Coast beach", I've always liked the area of Florida known as the "Redneck Riviera" - beaches from Pensacola Beach to Destin.

The beaches just below Mobile AL, are very nice.. Orange Beach and that whole stretch there. The Beaches in Biloxi MS, are open for the most part.. but not back to a pre-Katrina state. The babes that flock to the beaches near the Navy Base in Pensacola make them a site to see. Just dont get a navy fist stuck in your nose.. =).

Mississippi Beaches are nice, and we have the added benefit of the Casinos here to help entertain you when the beaches get to hot.

I live right outside the Gulfport Area and if you would like to go to the beaches around here the beach area in Biloxi is nice and Long Beach you can drive down Hwy 90 for about 24 miles of Beach front. Some of Hwy 90 is still rough, there are not many houses and such left to look at, but the beach is still pretty. I would not go into the water simply because there is still alot of debris left in the water from the hurricane but they have cleaned the beach. The bridge on Hwy.90 connecting Biloxi to Ocean Springs has not been completed yet, so you would have to go back to I-10 once your made it to Biloxi. Last time I went to Pensacola with my mother we had a awful time finding the beach. The beach and water in Gulf Shores were nice last time I went there.
