Wrong again.

Lived on a farm all my life.

Sold my herd of registered Jersey's in 07 and retired.

Still live on the farm and rent it to my son and daughter-in-law who have a 50 cow dairy herd.
Okay now that is something I can relate to so why the hostility? I too am retired from my main career and truly dont disagree with you about your prime farmland comment (and I really wasnt joking about the tics and rocks comment). I have a small farm on which I am able to feed my family, enjoy life and live in a way that would be known to my ancestors and I am able to make enough money to live pretty well all things considered. I have had farms in NC and Alabama and though I like those two places, I much prefer where I am at now and specifically chose this place because of its beauty, the people who live here and my desire to ensure my family has the opportunity to live in a place that still respects old fashioned values. I am but a blip on the farming scene so I dont try to claim to be a farmer and the best description I can find is homesteader..I raise my own food and feed, I raise my own beef and chicken, and I sell enough to pay for the small things in life that we enjoy. But I cant claim to have 50 head of cattle, so you win.

Nope !

But I am able to tell where in Missouri has --prime farmland-- and where doesn't.

In the 80's I was fed up with Minnesota winters and contacted a realtor in Ava MO about a dairy farm for sale.

Heck, even that realtor warned me about how extremely rocky the soil was on that dairy farm he had listed.

Well, marmac. I see you're busy again making new friends. Still got a chip on your shoulder about the homesteaders I see. Like saying they don't know the difference between good land and bad land and making judgements because they have a smaller acreage in this thread and others.

One thing I can say for certain about the "homesteaders" such as myself is we are starting from scratch. We are buying our property and although we may not farm, we still work hard to earn our way. We didn't have the luxury of having a place passed down to us through inheritance so is it any wonder we have smaller acreages than you? I'm working hard to pay for every square inch of this place.

So don't sit there and act like you're the high and mighty who knows it all and pick apart people that have had a different life story than you.

Just my .02

Is the term " homesteader" just a buzz word thought up by some southerner who wanted to be " hip" ?

In real farming country, the people don't even know what that phrase means.

I recall reading on the North Dakota forum about someone wanting to move there, buy a few acres and be a " homesteader".

That thread died quickly cuz most respondents in North Dakota didn't know what the heck he was talking about.

Most informed him that the " Homestead Act" had expired over 100 years ago .

Yup, must be a southern expression---( homesteasder )

Actually, most states have some limited homestead laws with about nine of them having the broadest of the laws.

Don't see "Homesteader " anywhere in my posting name.

Completely agree! I am still shocked and a little frightened by the thunderstorms out here. They do not have storms like that back east! And folks back east think Missouri is flat, too. I hate flat land; I couldn't live here if it were. I do miss mountains sometimes but there is enough elevation here to satisfy me.

I think the lakes here are fine, too. I used to work near Stockton Lake and on occasion, parked by the lake and did my paperwork. I thought it was lovely. I've been to Truman many times, Lake of the Ozark a few times...suited me fine. I'd like to visit Table Rock Lake, it can't be so popular by accident.

I was out here for two years before and now back and still not used to the storms.

I love the rain, like the hail fine as long as it isn't huge, enjoy a good lightening show, but as soon as I hear tornado I get scared.
