I will agree. They are mainly the same. The only difference is that the crime rate is quite higher in Joplin than CJ, Webb Cty and Carthage. I believe it to be because the police in Joplin are very short handed and busy as opposed to the ahemm "active" police in the outside small towns. They do appear the same other than that. Most of the people from CJ, WC and Carthage are aarogant and hold their little cliques close.

Other than I have no idea how "Do What?" says that you did not hear what I said, nothing....
When I hear "Do What?" I nearly almost always want to say "Go @#%^ yourself, that's what you can do." But I don't, considering how rude that is to say.

Do what is just another way of saying like, I didn't hear you or are you kidding me and things like that. If you say Do what? It's just that you didn't hear. If it is more like Do WHAT??? It's are you kidding me?or No way! (this is hard to do online...)

Regional diff...
You'ns suppose some of this might be (just guessin here) regional differences?
Some of speech, as we all know, are colloquialisms...so if someone in Joplin says "Do What?" Or if someone in Encino says, "Totally." Or if someone in Ottawa says, "Eh?"...
Just a thought.

But HOW did "Do What?" develop as a way to say "I did not understand what you just said, could you please repeat yourself"? It does not make any sense AT ALL.

I live in the middle of Joplin and Springfield, right off of I-44 and have experienced both on a fairly regular basis. There ARE more places to shop in Joplin than WalMart. There is a nice mall in Joplin and new areas near it with big box stores. The mall has Macy's, JC Penney and all the normal shops one finds in a mall. This being said, Joplin cannot complete with Springfield. Not even with the envolvement of John Q Hammons who started updating the town several years ago. Just look what he did for Springfield!
Joplin has always been a rough town. My grandparents lived there (off of 7th St in Deuquesne - misspelled, I know, sorry!) in the 1950's - the house still sits back off the south side of 7th, and a little west near the TDC Trucking CO.
Two of my daughters live in Springfield now. The difference in the towns is like day and night. I was in Joplin 2 weeks ago and had a lovely town with a girl friend of mine. Springfield's north side is a lot like old town Joplin. But, take a look around Kearney St and some of the older areas and you'll see that Springfield is cleaning up those older areas. It takes A LOT of money to do so!
There are better paying jobs in Springfield, too. It's not unusual to find $10. an hour jobs for uneducated people these days. T-Mobile, just off I-44 pays that with excellent health ins and other benefits. Springfield is a pretty nice town, if you ask me.
But I wouldn't want my kids in public schools in any larger town, anywhere! Won't go into it but I just wouldn't.
Sorry you're not happy in Joplin, but I'd simply advise you to move elsewhere, if you're not. But remember, you'll find fat, lazy people everywhere. And poor spellers.
Fall will soon be here and we'll all be happier, I think. I'm ready for cool weather! Just hope there and no more ICE STORMS this winter! Joplin had it MUCH, MUCH easier during that than we did! We drove to Sam's in Joplin about the 3-4th day and the town was barely touched. Our town had no power for a week or more.
That's my rant and I'm done.
Blessings, y'all!
