A friend of the family named Betty used to live in Piedmont. She seemed to like it. She called it an old-fashioned town. It's almost totally white, and pretty small, too-- you know, the kind where everyone knows everyone else.
Clearwater Lake (man-made) and the Black River are there. The area is popular for camping and recreation.
Over a period of two months back in 1973, Piedmont received a lot of attention when hundreds of area residents claimed to see strange lights in the sky (UFO's, of course!) In fact, Betty used to say that people would see the lights so often that they eventually "got used to it".

I'm from the area, though not the town. I have spent a lot of time there, though. It's an okay small town, but not a great one, I don't think. It mostly seems to be retired white people. It's not a terrible place to live, but it's not a place I would move to without family in the area. The natural environment is beautiful, though.

Just my two cents. Most people tend to gravitate more toward Poplar Bluff because that is where more of the jobs, hospitals, and restaurants and events are going on.

If you do decide to move to a more rural area like Southeast Missouri, make sure you have a job lined up already, as well.

Again, not trying to turn you off to Piedmont. It's a decent little town, but it is small and very white. That doesn't mean the residents will be racist. I don't think they necessarily are, but it isn't very diverse. In my experience it is friendly, though. Also make sure you have a job ready for you. It's hard to find jobs in these small towns, especially if you're not somebody's relative. It's very conservative and religious, which is fine with me, but some people don't like it.

Best of luck whatever you decide.
