lifelongMOgal, you're on my list, too. A different one than Versatile's, though!

Emanuel Cleavers spin on earmarks. Wat would you do in his shoes?

Ask the Mattie Rhodes Center to explain in detail how that money is going to be spent, find out if there are any real results and request an audit and see if it all adds up. Cleaver sounds too busy taking credit to do anything remotely close to that, though.

This reminds me of a report several years ago when Rep. Sam Graves earmarked a large sum of money to study the effects of "goth culture" to some organization out in Blue Springs.

This nonsense crosses party lines as you can see.

Earmarks are used for one thing, and one thing only--to buy votes. Both sides do it.

The whole system is broken. This election may have been the beginning of the end of politics as usual.

This is one of the few things we have ever 100% agreed on. But I have absolutely no faith that things are in any way about to change. Why would they when the system works so well for those in power?

All Cleaver does is buy inner city votes with earmark pork. I am very disappointed that Jacksoncountians didn't fire him last week. Spin, spin, spin. Keeping his own constituency stuck in the welfare system with handouts instead of enabling them to get out with hand-ups.

Oh, and I'm glad I'm on your "list". Always good to know when liberals just shut down discussion that does not align with their own. Typical indeed.

Those in power who are using our money to buy votes for themselves will do everything they can to keep the present system going. But the problem is, it can't go on like this. We've accumulated $13 trillion in debt this way and piling on more debt like there is no tomorrow. With that operating philosophy, there may not be a tomorrow for the good old USA.

There is only so much money that can be borrowed and only so much money with which to pay interest. We've almost reached the point where we are borrowing money just to pay the interest. At some point, creditors have to question the wisdom of loaning us more, and when credit markets turn, it will be like a school of fish turning--it happens all at once. Unless someone opens up a payday loan store for governments, at that point the game is over.

This has all come about because we've allowed politics to become a career.

But what most fail to understand is that this is what they're elected to do. Congressmen and Senators aren't elected locally to represent the country as a whole. They're elected to bring home the bacon to their local districts and their states.

While it may seem desirable to unseat deeply entrenched politicians and bring in new faces and new ideas, and it can be, there are also unintended, little understood consequences. The primary one is the loss of seniority in each chamber which is the basis for committee assignments, leadership positions and committee chairmanships. Those count highly when the hog's being divided up.

Out with the old, in with the new also means a loss of power and influence.

Like hell they're not. If they weren't, they wouldn't be voting on national issues.

How did the bacon get to DC in the first place? You make it sound as if they're bringing home free money. It is most emphatically NOT free money.

If you unseat them regularly, seniority isn't a problem--none of them have any to speak of.
