True, while caverns and the such may most likely not make your hubby any cash, they are still nevertheless a feature of the area to be aware of. Like southern Springfield area - another karst area, and one that you will see dotted with a multitude of sinkholes, some that are very new, that have swallowed homes. Other area, such as Perry County [between StL and Cape G] is also blessed with thousands of sinkholes, and its something to be aware of, when putting in septic systems, building roads and houses, etc. This is NOT to scare or worry ya - W Plains is not that much, but it does have some of those features, and something to be aware of when building. And yes, you guys could live there, all your life, and not even be aware of the karst - just depends upon exactly where the property is, etc. Again, 'tis not something to be fearful of, just to be use the knowledge in a constructive manner. Plot the land on TopoZone - The Web's Topographic Map, and more!, and see if there are any sinkholes, etc on or nearby. If there is, , be something neat. Just don't build upon/in it.
WP is almost 2.5 hours from Branson, btw.

Ok I feel like a big dummy .......... seriously I look at the map ok its red with black lines .. some areas have green swooshes ....
My daughter ask me all the time didn't you learn this in school- NO we did not ... the only map I ever had to look at was of the states and I had to memorize t hem what the capitals were .. and the main industry in that state...
So If you do not mind giving me a mini lesson .. I sure would be willing to learn!

lol - no problem Don't be intimidated! I live/breath these maps, have a few [uhemmm,,,] hundred or so... If you want/can/desire, can get a fairly decent map book at W-Mart (usually near the checkout, has a red cover w/ the state outline sometimes on it) and elsewhere that has the entire state w/in it, showing topo features, w/ roads, etc. I've a few states of those too... Comes in very handy when traveling too, like when an interstate comes to a halt for some reason, and ya bale off, to take back/side roads.
Basically, those black/brown/dark 'squiggly' lines, each one is at the same elevation.
The closer they are to each other, the more steep the hill.
The further apart they are, the more flatter the ground.
Green denotes vegetation, like a forest.
Black squares, that would be buildings.
Caves are marked by a Y looking symbol.
Sinkholes, are also called depressions, and have a circular type feature, w/ little lines [crosshatches] pointing inward.
More in-depth help can be found here:
USGS Mapping Information: Topographic Map Symbols -- Reading Topographic Maps

New Page 2
If you want, PM me the location, and will check it for you too...
BTW, there are no dunce hats - everyone learns something the first time sometime...

USGS - Mid-Continent Geographic Science Center (broken link)
KY3 - News - UMR team looks for more data on sinkhole in Nixa (broken link)
ps: such can happen anywhere - esp. Florida; any area that has such features.

Sinkholes, normally, are placid little nice no-bother depressions in the ground. However, recall the saying that goes something like what ya can't see can't bother ya? Ok, I don't either, but,,, still point is that the world under our feet is pretty simple on one hand, but on the other can be very complex, and humans at times tend to not give much thought to that which they can't see, and then just take such for granted. Point is that, well,,, damn, ummmm,,, got lost there,,, oh yea,,, point is like the example above, there was no warning [besides the imminent rumbling as his garage and car descend towards hades] that ground water beneath this quiet little 'burb had carved out a hole, which created a void beneath the manicured turf, and then as we recall Newton and his apple, gravity pulled upon the weakened sod & building, creating your great lake sized
Quakes and sinkholes are actually two quite different geological things. First is caused by various factors, such as a couple tectonic plates doing a bump and grind. Sinks are caused, mainly, but groundwater eating away, like termites, at dissolvable rocks/minerals, such as limestone, salt, etc. However, with that said, a sinkhole can be created due to a quake, as the quake's waves rumble and cause underground streams to shift patterns, or cause land to subside [ie: collapse] in pockets.
Well, speaking of earth and holes, gotta go get some laundry, packing, etc. done for this weekend, as will be joining a few other deranged and goofy mud crawlers and pit droppers for our national convention...

Another thought way out in left field --------- ya know the ice age .. is this something that sort of could of happen with the land ?
Ok yea I told ya out in left field!
I think I could read about those and be totally engrossed in them ........... its a matter of the land gives and the land takes away ............ is this a form of erosion? no warning just poof hunny im home and woops ur gone ... no little uneasiness nothing just the land drops? That is some hole!

Many sinkholes in parts of FL. Some here. Difference is you can get insurance for sinkhole prone areas of FL, but I couldn't here.
