I would say that Springfield would be the nearest big town. Haven't lived there but my aunt did yrs ago. I think it is a pretty town as towns go. All the services you need are there A lot of Arkansas people come there to shop.

2be - Karst Plains, errr... West Plains is about 2 hours from Rolla, Springfield, and Poplar Bluff. Nice little town, sitting on plains, with many sinkholes in the area [hence our cavers' joshing about the town's name ]. About an hour from Bull Shoals and Norfork Lakes, and all that region has to offer. Overall, area.

lol, sorry...
Karts is a word that describes an area that is blessed or cursed [depending upon who is viewing the land, and what you are doing ] with many sinkholes, caves, springs, and/or other related geological features, where the ground can be honeycombed with subsurface passages.
True, while caverns and the such may most likely not make your hubby any cash, they are still nevertheless a feature of the area to be aware of. Like southern Springfield area - another karst area, and one that you will see dotted with a multitude of sinkholes, some that are very new, that have swallowed homes. Other area, such as Perry County [between StL and Cape G] is also blessed with thousands of sinkholes, and its something to be aware of, when putting in septic systems, building roads and houses, etc. This is NOT to scare or worry ya - W Plains is not that much, but it does have some of those features, and something to be aware of when building. And yes, you guys could live there, all your life, and not even be aware of the karst - just depends upon exactly where the property is, etc. Again, 'tis not something to be fearful of, just to be use the knowledge in a constructive manner. Plot the land on TopoZone - The Web's Topographic Map, and more!, and see if there are any sinkholes, etc on or nearby. If there is, , be something neat. Just don't build upon/in it.
WP is almost 2.5 hours from Branson, btw.
