What's it like living in nevada?
An old friend is trying to sell me his house for a very low price in Nevada.
He says it is a great place to live and it is very cheap for real estate
and property taxes. Is this true???
He said it is a very happening place and there is a lot to do especially
at night. I called a realtor to get a better idea about the area and she
made it sound like it is a little farm town that is the county seat.
The realtor said they do have a Walmart but she didn't know whether or
not to agree about the happening place. I'm really starting to wonder
if he's trying to sell me a dog of a house in a very slow pace town.
He did say it is about 90 miles from Kansas City and there is plenty to do
there. I wonder if a bus even goes from Nevada to KCMO?
Am I getting a bum steer about this little missouri town or what???
Thanks

Nevada is a small town, with a relatively low cost of living. If you're into a vibrant night life, Nevada is NOT the place you want to be. It's a rural community that has all of the attributes associated with that type of lifestyle.

It sounds like it might be the typical small midwest town that is
mostly agriculture in nature. I wouldn't expect Nevada to be a hot
spot with the real estate prices so low but it isn't all that far to Joplin
or even Kansas City which would be a fun place to visit I would
think. I guess I was wondering if Nevada has a lot of poverty
and unemployed or is it just a small nice clean little midwest town?
Thanks

lol,, I would question the sincerity &/or humour of your "old friend's" intentions, or at least choice of words...
Of course,,, guess it depends on what thinks of "a very happening place and there is a lot to do especially at night." Bopping from a multi-star restaurant and going to a concert, followed by some drinks & dancing. Or,,, sitting on front porch, sipping on a beer, counting the bugs hitting the zapper.

I think he might have been shooting straight. It just depends on whom is doing the talking about what is going on Things to do are quite abit different from what a 20 yr old does in Nevada vs an person 40 plus would do. The usual small town stuff to do socially/community wise. Go look for your self is the best answer. I have never heard anything bad about Nevada at all.

I can't believe it took someone so long to mention Cottey College being in Nevada! Not a bad place to live, but I would never call it "happening". I was a Cottey Girl, and left Nevada as often as I could to find things to do. Unless it has changed dramatically in the past 10 years, which I doubt.

I've lived in Nevada 5 years. I suppose it is typical, whatever that means. Night life consists of joining a church or community group, unless you want to hang at one of the several bars. When I first arrived, I drove somewhere (ANYwhere) else, but find I'm more and more content with what Nevada has to offer. There is a community college (Crowder) for adult education, YMCA, special interest groups like community theater, the Arts council, and choir, high school sports, our own minor league baseball team, a summer festival that celebrates the burning down of the town (how cool is that!). Is it clannish? Yes. Do they resist new ideas? Regularly. There are opportunities here to be part of something, while in a larger city, you're just one more body, and for a small town, we have a good variety of amenities.

It doesn't sound like a "happening place". It sounds like any sleepy midwest town. I'm sure there are things to do, but happening? Probably not.
