I'm a reporter for the Columbia Missourian newspaper and I'm always looking for stories that our readership wants...

So are there any that you've been wanting to have covered?

subscribe to Mike Martin's blog and chase down what he's saying about the link between the old-time moneyed interests in town and certain suspect moves made by city government, i.e., the 10-story parking garage disgrace, and why they're planning another one. The reason? it frees up space now used for parking on the north side of downtown, esp. around the courthouse, for development-- and Hank Waters and his family, reputedly, owns that land. The next time you hear the city or county threaten eminent domain, look for the story behind it-- the power establishment has used eminent domain in Columbia for nearly a century to enrich themselves. Martin has written at length about how the city has used eminent domain in recent years, most recently for a place to build a permanent building for the Missouri Historical Society. Only Martin's muckraking journalism stopped that from happening. More generally, the power establishment loves to have the public pay for their little pet projects, like the YouZeum and the Missouri Theater.

I'd be interested to see whether teh Missourian would actually run such stories, though--George Kennedy is often seen as part of that establishment.

Beyond institutional old-money corruption, Columbia is generally a really badly-run city. Their poor response to the blizzard, compared to Jefferson City's, is a disgrace-- they have fewer plow trucks for twice as much roadways as does Jeff, but people think that Jeff is the podunk town. They just get the roads cleared and get people back to work more quickly.

Good luck! It's a time of flux in journalism unlike any other time in the profession's existence, but out of the uncertainty will come something interesting-- I just don't know what yet.
