In October it can be cool. Days should be reasonably warm...upper 60's/70's although with Missouri you just never know.
Lots of hotels available, Drury Inn is nice, easy access to Interstate 70 and main street (Stadium Blvd.) to get to the University, shopping and dining. There are lots of options available from the very inexpensive to the upper price ranges. There is a Best Western, Days Inn, Courtyard by Marriott, Baymont Inn Suites, Amerihost Inn, Comfort suites, Fairfield Inn, Econo Lodge, Stony Creek Inn, La Quinta Inn, Hilton Inn....as you can see most major chain hotels are here. Just pick you favorite and call their main number and they can hook you up with reservation for Columbia.
Great hospitals, University Hospitals and clinics has three hospitals, one is strictly for cancer patients. Then there is Boone Hospital Center. Both are pretty big. The University is a teaching hospital and has patients from all the state of Missouri. It is the "go to" hospital for major trauma, and major illness and diseases. Although some people do not like to go to teaching hospitals, Boone Hospital is also an excellent choice. Welcome to Missouri.

so you want to know what the winter is like in missery? one of the reasons i moved to arizona from missouri was the weather in the winter. but, 10 years later i am planning to move back to columbia. have you ever had your nostrils freeze together as you breathe in through your nose? (there will be a lot of people laughing as they read that sentence, because the totally get it). and then the next day you will be wondering why you put on so many layers of clothes because it will be 60 degrees outside. this is missouri winter.

4 equal seasons of weather in MO. If you have spent any time in say D.C. ...it's pretty similar weather. Winters are short but cold, as in extreme...it can get cold in MO, as in below freezing between Nov-Feb. Jan-Feb you will want to be in AZ. Days and temps change a lot.
It was 100 plus degrees recently with nearly 100% humidity(made AZ look nice) for over a week....and it cooled to the 60's the other day. So it all depends.

Winter? Not really a problem. I moved here from Southern California, and am kind of amused by the "You never know what the weather will be like tomorrow!" comments. It's like people don't ever watch a weather forecast. In the winter months (Dec., Jan., Feb), you'll have a few nights where it's cold...around 0. You'll also have a few days where it's in the 50s or 60s. Most of the time, you can expect daytime temps in the 40s and night temps in the low 20s. I kind of like the days in the 50s and 60s, and the occasionally really cold nights...breaks the monotony. The interesting days are when it's 55 at 8 a.m., and 35 at 2 p.m..
Columbia gets around 20-25 inches of snow a year on average. Since it's usually spread around between a few "big" storms and a few smaller 1-2 inch dustings, snow usually isn't a problem. It's rare that we get more than 6 inches in a storm...and those occasional warm temp and averages in the 40s keep most of the snowfall from sticking around very long. Every decade or so we'll have a big snowstorm...had one last year, had one about 13 years ago too.
There's kind of a hotel row at the I-70/Stadium intersection (Exit 124)...recognizable names. It's also near the Columbia Mall if that's important. There's a similar growth of hotels at the I-70/63 (Exit 128) interchange. Interestingly, there aren't a whole lot of choices in the downtown and university areas...the only one I can really think of is the Regency. Great location...on Broadway downtown, near the University and the shops. But it's an older hotel--there are plans to remodel it in the next year or so. Kind of a tradoff between old hotel in the middle of downtown, or newer one a few miles away.

clipperlover said it best, the snow comes in big storms, usually a few a year. there will be many days that it snows but doesn't stay long. it melts the next day. and it seemed to NEVER snow on christmas. sorry about that one. it will be a few years before we move back to columbia.
